I’ve been playing since release, but haven’t really gotten anywhere. I think I’ve deleted half a dozen or more mid-high level characters because I decided I preferred a different race/class/biography combination. I’ve learned two things doing this though: 1. I’m sick of levelling, though I still love playing, and 2. I need to play classes that explore well.

I’ll start with number 2. When I was playing a ranger I felt pretty godlike through level 50 or so. I could dive into combat with several vets and various adds with reasonable confidence that I would at least survive, if not dominate, the encounter. Does this ability to go, see, and conquer extend all the way to 80? Do other classes (like engineer maybe? please?) also have this ability in the end? I can pretty well guess that warriors and guardians do, but I’m trying to figure out which others do as well.

As for number 1, are there any good guides out there on how to level yourself through crafting on the cheap? Playing the game is always a lot more fun once you’re relatively set than when you’re still trying to claw your way up the ranks.

Every class can be strong at 80, but I suggest going with class you enjoy playing and not so much which class is the strongest. You can always make a level 1 and go to Mists, that way you can try out a class at max level with all skills available to you.

There are guides for proffs, you can google them. Cooking would probably be easiest and cheapest one to level.

Here’s an answer you may not expect:

Necromancers. All things being equal, at level 80, they are objectively the most durable class in the game. The Guardian runs a close second, but the Necro’s ability to survive brutal onslaught is unparalleled. On top of that (here I can only speak for building Power/Crit and running wells) they hit like a semi-truck full of yellow-cake uranium. Leveling starts off a little fragile as with all clothies, but once you hit 10, you can do whatever you want.

Arenanet lies.

Yeah, I’d have to say my necro is about as hard to take down as my warrior. I’m also using a wells build with D/D, 30,0,10,30,0. I really wish there was an elite well, though.

My main is an eng and I made him really really tanky while leveling (Hearty armor, tough/vit trinkets. Then when that’s over, the Knight prefixes) and I basically steamrolled all through the end map (Cursed shore). Before I came there, I heard the horror stories about mobs 1-2shotting people regardless of build. Then when I first stepped in, I dragged like 5 mobs and killed them. (bomb + elixer-infused bomb trait is really really awesome for pve). I’ve been doing pretty much the same till now :P An Eng also has alot of utility and unique combo fields that I find interesting. For example, with a pistol/shield and bomb kit, you can replicate the thief’s skill of mass invi by putting down a smoke bomb and hitting #4 twice on shield skill for a blast finisher. Really useful in escaping tricky situations.

Don’t disturb me, I have a cat in me at the moment.

All classes and casuals alike can face roll PvE because PvE in this game is about as hard as breathing.
