Need help choosing a class
Little pressed for time so sorry if this post is hard to understand and isn’t exactly grammatically correct. I played mesmer quite a bit around launch but haven’t been on mine much since so it might be different now. I found the mesmer to be a lot of fun, but it seemed to a have a higher skill ceiling than a lot of the other classes. Most people when leveling run mostly power and precision gear, if you find you’re dying a lot feel free to swap some of your gear with some that gives you vitality and toughness. If you’re considering switching to a profession that you’ll die less with the heavy armor classes, guardian and warrior, are probably the most survivable. The dodge mechanic becomes a little more important when you’re playing on a melee class though. If you don’t like either of those you could try one of the medium armor classes, the engi, thief, and ranger. Of those three the thief would probably be your best bet, I’ve found the engi to be a lot of fun but like the mesmer It can be a little difficult to play at first, I don’t have a lot of experience on a thief but from the bit I do and what I’ve heard from others it’s fairly easy to stealth out of bad situations with a thief. The ranger may be the most survivable out of the three medium armor classes and it’s a decent class if you’re planning on doing mainly PvE, I really can’t say much about the ranger as I haven’t played on one. From what I’ve heard though the pet mechanic is kind of broken and the class needs rebalanced. Someone who mains one could probably tell you more. If you still want to play a light armor class I don’t have much experience on an ele, but in my personal experience with the necro, again around launch, it was fairly survivable, especially for a light armor class. This is mostly due to the death shround mechanic which almost functions as a second life bar.
All of this being said some of your problem with leveling might just be that you’re doing it alone, it’s a lot easier if you’re leveling with a group. You might just want to try guesting on a larger server if you’re currently doing it on one of the lower population servers.
I don’t know much about Mesmer because I don’t really like it and never played it, but I’ve seen it in action and can tell that unless you use it with a plan, it’s hard to play.
It’s one of these classes that needs the player to be tricky with the game and its mechanics.
Sure, you can always learn them by playing it, but from what you say, something easier and less complicated to know the game would be better.
Warrior is a classic and a well requested profession in parties that will help you know the game. With that you just need to dodge, but overall all you have to think about is to deal damage, and you can allow you to take some.
Guardian is more strategical than a Warrior, but still works almost the same. It’s still intuitive and simple in it’s mechanics, and doesn’t die so easily in levelling.
Don’t know much about the other classes.
Thanks!
That was very helpful! I think I’m sucking cause I’m not really use to a mice and keyboard lol.. I just bought a mice with 12 buttons. So hope that works! It’s a mmo mice! I actual was looking at eng, but I heard they were very similar to mesimer skill level. I may just try Mesmer for a little bit longer cause I do really like it. I have trouble with the whole kiting and pressing the right keys. I know what moves and things I want to do just can’t click them when it gets tight.. Lol
Thanks again,,

Oh, so it’s just a matter of timing. Well, that comes with time I guess.
And yes, Engies are indeed similar to mesmers, so maybe it’s better to roll one when you are more confident. Enjoy
You shouldn’t be clicking your skills to use them, you should be pressing the appropriate corresponding number keys. For movement, use the mouse by holding the left and right mouse buttons down to go forward. That will free up your left hand to press the number keys. Takes time to get used to if you are learning PC gaming, but get in good habits from the beginning and it will pay in the long run.
Oops, I do use the numbers for the attacks. I just always forget which ones to choose lol.. I didn’t know I can move with he trolled I’m going to try that.. I did do a ranger at one point and liked it, but I thought it was very cookie cutter and simple.. Just didn’t think mesimer was this hard. Lol
Is there a way I can buy a new profession. Level 35 took me two weeks.. Lol
Hi and welcome
You don’t need to buy a new profession you have 5 character slots- just roll whatever you like.
About movement- as someone has said try moving with the left and right mouse buttons held in- it becomes very natural quite quickly and it frees your left hand to use for skills. Since you have an MMO mouse consider binding your Fskills to your thumb bottons and you can bind dodge too.
Mesmer is a very nice class – I have 2
the thing is they are pretty trait dependent so they do become a lot more powerful at higher levels.
They are fairly slow to level- but they have so many tricks that you shouldn’t really have trouble staying alive.
Try Great Sword and Staff for leveling.
GS does more damage the longer the distance from target and it does great damage- you also have a very nice knock back in case you get swamped.
Staff is very very useful for chaos storm- use it often as both an attack and defense.
If you cast it on yourself and use staff 2 to jump back you will get chaos armor on yourself.
That said chaos armor (staff 4) is a very nice thing- use it
Don’t forget to make use of your phantasms- they hit like trucks
Happy Mesmering
Engineer is an OP class, don’t roll one unless you really want to just EZmode through everything.
Mesmer isn’t really much better tbh but at least you have to dodge and stuff.
