Guild Wars 2

I’m not new to GW2, but I’m new to WvW, and I’m a little confused. I’ve done some searching here and on Google and can’t seem to find my answer.

I’d like to level a character in WvW, but I can’t seem to make any exp.

I stay with the zerg, I rez, I DPS as much as possible, I heal the groups, I get a killing blow every now and then – I just can not for the life of me get any decent xp. After playing for 3 hours the other night I had maybe 300xp.

What should I be doing? Everyone seems to say it’s easy, so it has to be something I’m doing wrong.

EXP in WvW can be gained by:
1. Killing people. EXP here is about the same from killing mobs. A.K.A: Low.
2. Ressing People. Same as ressing people anywhere else. Mid EXP
3. Completing Events.

Events are everywhere, and many of them reward large amounts of EXP. The amount of EXP depends on how hard it is to accomplish said task. Successfully Taking stonemist rewards about 3-4 times the normal event completion reward, whereas killing a doylak rewards about 1/2 normal event completion reward.

It is not uncommon to wander into a supply camp, take it, kill 2 doylaks, and have completed 3 events worth pretty good EXP. Defeating Sentries (The flag guys on the mini-map) are easy, and will flip regularly, and worth good EXP as well.

As a general rule, you’ll want to run with the zerg, but only so much as the zerg is doing events. If your zerg is spawn-camping the enemy team, then you won’t gain EXP very fast at all.

Okay its the events that I’m missing out on, which is the key I think. I’ve seen that mentioned in other places as well.

My next step then is to find the best way to find the events. Every time I’m with a zerg, we’re locked in one place against another zerg.

“travel solo to/into the Events.” – What’s the best way to identify them? I mean I can see the fighting and commander on the map. Am I missing something else?

Join a Commanders squad and follow them, around.

Following Commanders is not always a reliable way to do events. Like you said, sometimes you get caught up in a keep siege or a field battle against another zerg, and while these types of things are both fun and are a great help to your server, they are not a good way to gain exp because you’re not moving. Some commander actually take time to flip light objectives, the best way I’ve found for doing events quickly (mostly for my Dailies) is to join up with a Havok Squad (a small group of players, usually guildies) and go around flipping light points, like Sentries (the flags on the map) Dolyaks (the moving yak-like things on your map) and carefully going after Supply Camps. Try to avoid major battles and be very careful if you decide to sneak into enemy territory to take an objective. Once you’ve been at it for awhile, you can sorta gauge what a Commander might go after, and then decide whether or not that objective fits what you (personally) are trying to accomplish.
