I am currently lvl7 and I find it kind of hard to level. I dont know what im doing wrong, I do some of the events, the heart quest thingys on the map and the story quest. I take really long to do alot of the quest because i take forever to kill something. What am I doing wrong?

Explore the maps (unlock waypoints, visit POIs and Vistas), gather all materials, res downed NPCs. All these things grant XP.

Going after critters off the beaten path can be worth a lot more (3x) than along the path everyone takes. Just avoid being outnumbered.

Explore all the cities. You get there via the gate in your starting city. Free XP and now danger free other than falling damage.

Be sure to talk to the people who issue the heart quests once they are complete. These are karma merchants, and the equipment they sell is usually better than others of equivalent level. They only sell one or two pieces though, so always check a new heart you unlock. Also, many hearts have non-combat tasks that can be done to complete them, you could try that if you’re having trouble killing enemies. Don’t wander too far out of level appropriate areas.

I’ve found that the daily achievements give a good chunk of XP, so try to complete any of those you’re able to.

Harvesting resource nodes also gives a good bit of experience and you can sell copper and logs on the trading post for better prices than at the merchant. At some merchants you can buy food which will also give you +10% experience from kills. When you start crafting you can get a lot of levels that way.

Look at the level of the monster (next to its name) and your level (bottom left hand corner).

As a gross exaggeration, killing something 16 levels above you isn’t going to give you much more exp, but will take forever.

Perhaps you’re hunting in an area with mobs 2-3 levels above you.

Get into guild asap. You can get a lot of help from guildmates. Just don’t ask them to donate money or mats to you. If you have close friend in the game then ask him for gold and lvl few crafts fast. It is a lot of Xp points. Use craftig guides. Doing maps with buddy much more fun and goes faster. Always ask in map chat if anyone does same map and invite them to do it with you. More people more kills faster lvling.

As for taking forever to kill stuff, what profession are you and how are you fighting? Some professions take a few levels to unlock traits to get stronger, others feel strong right off the bat. Be patient. Read all skill tooltips and understand what the skills do and what hits hard. Button mashing and standing still will not work in GW2.

Just being in a fairly successful guild will net you some passive bonuses. It will also give you access to some potentially helpful people who can adventure with you and give you pointers.

Gather everything you see. It’s easy XP and money on the TP.
Kill yellow animals. They’re often ignored and will give more XP the longer they’ve been alive.
Hearts, DEs, and exploration (as you’ve been doing) are great.
When you get to level 35+, you can do dungeons. Each path will net you almost a full level.
