Guild Wars 2

Currently I have a Norn Warrior and when it came to the story mission : Echoes of the past, where you have to vs the Elder Thruln, I really struggled with killing him without going down. I went down twice and then click restart from checkpoint and that was the only way I killed him when he had less health.

I use a greatsword simply because most of the other weapons have skills with stun and immobilizing and I simply don’t get how they fit in with a Warrior as you have to be right next to the enemies to attack them. I get hit a lot against enemies and how do I stop this am I doing something wrong, for example I was a level 7 vsing 2 white moas (level 7) with a greatssword and they almost down me, Is this normal?

GW2 is a great game, I just need a bit of a guide to help me with the warrior because I am almost dying everytime I fight. Is this the right profession for me? I would like to be a bit more of a tanker.

You are lvl 7, so you have access to 2 weapon sets now. You should take advantage of that. You can change to a 2nd weapon set when your greatsword skills are on cooldown, and unload more skills. You also need to dodge a lot.

This game is more active/reactive than other games. If you just stand still in one position, you will get hit… A lot… And hard!! Keep moving, dodging, changing weapons, watching cooldowns, using your heal, and you’ll do fine. Just try not to stand still in one spot, or you will have trouble

Unfortunately yes, it is common. Don’t over agro stuff you are not a tank that doesn’t take damage. The game is designed for a more ‘active defense’ not a stationary soak it up strategy to ‘tanking.’

Keep your armor up to date as you play the stronger it is the better you can soak damage without dying. Move around and watch for the ‘big hits’ they usually have some ‘power up’ visual. When you see it, dodge. Once you get past lvl 14 you will be able to afford heal sig. Make this the first skill you buy the re-gen will make life a lot easier.

Until then get a rifle and kyte till it gets low on health. Then switch to your greatsword and finish things off.

Get a rifle, circle strafe in melee, use active dodging, abuse greatsword abilities 2 and 3. Hundred blades stops people being hit from attacking you a lot of the time, and greatsword ability 3 will send you past them so they can’t hit you. The only time you should ever not be circle strafing is when you’re using hundred blades.

Warrior is one of the easiest classes in the game to level with. If you are having trouble that doesn’t bode well for your ability to succeed at this game.

First of all stuns and immobilizing the enemy do have their place in the warrior playstyle. From keeping the enemy from moving away from you to just locking them down. I wouldn’t write off any weapon until you try it from every angle first. Also think of it this way you use a immobilizing skill, dodge away and switch to a rifle and start picking them off. Its one strategy I use to great effect. Also reading the enemy and know what you should dodge helps greatly. If you want a more tanking build then your best bet would be to get a 1h Sword, Axe or Mace and get a shield OH. I myself roll with a 2h mace in one weapon set and a rifle in the other. That way I can deal with enemies up close or far away.

However bear in mind later on as you unlock more utility skills and traits things do become a little easier. But again learning to dodge attacks, using skills that slow, stop the enemy at the right time, and using utility skills that either buff you or work against the mob all will help you. Not to mention making judicious use of the Heal skill that you possess when its needed.

Yep, learning to circle strafe around your opponent while keeping them within range will significantly reduce the amount of times you take a hit. This applies to all classes and all ranges.

For boss fights which tends to have very damaging AOE attacks, it’s just better to hang back with a rifle or longbow. You’re not going to survive very long at melee range even if you dodge like a god.

Thanks people btw I am level 9 now haha. No its not like I am bad at this game…I have tried out a few other professions like necromancer and guardian and the engineer, and found the necro to be really fun just didn’t have great damage. In the options menu which boxes should I tick for auto targetting and all the other boxes? and I find it hard to turn quickly can I adjust the sensitivity? thanks anyways.

I second the circle strafing. I’m a Norn Warrior too, with dual axes. I take on Champion Spiders solo simply circle strafing. They can’t touch me. By the time they attack, I’m nearly behind them. I’ll take on 2-3 at a time with this method.

The only time this ever fails is when additional players join the battle as they distract the enemy to the point you end up strafing right into their attack. You have to take caution not to do this.
