hm maybe play a little pve for a few hours so u get familiar with the mechanics, then there is a ton of builds in the mesmer forums. try blackwater its fun to play. mesmer is not just a class u can jump on an then u can kill everyone. u gotta know what kinda mesmer u wanna be, thats why id suggest u go ahaead an try it out in pve first.

I don’t know about trying it out in PvE first to learn about PvP. It takes you to level 30 just to get a full skill bar and you won’t have all your utility skills and traits till level 80 or past. Mesmer in PvE has a reputation for being hard until level 40 when you get sufficient traits.

Maybe join a PvP guild and see if someone can give you some tips. Try one of the PvP forums also for specific PvP Mesmer advice.

If not your first character (and you have some materials saved up), you can easily level a character to 40+ via crafting for very little gold. Buying everything to LVL 76 should be less than 40g.

BTW, I’m not suggesting this as you completely loose the training and experience that comes with leveling the profession completely up. While that may not have a huge impact on using cookie cutter builds at LVL 80, it does effect your ability to modify those builds to your own playstyle (due to the lack of familiarity with other utilities, weapon sets, traits, etc.).

This is one of my first builds and the one i used to Master the Mesmer in sPvP in the beginning:

With this build you should be able to:

- Do a significant damage with Phantasms;
- Have decent survival;
- Spam a lot of clones (from dodging also);
- Do a solid damage from far (Greatsword);
- Forget about shattering. With this mechanic you can master the other parts of the Mesmer, and then you can try to focus on the shattering part!

But you need to:
- Use dodge a lot;
- Understand how the Clone and Phantasm mechanic works;
- Understand how the shattering mechanic works and the different combinations.

The main tips I can give to a new mesmer are:

1) Don’t try to go hyrbid. Too many times people take traits where phantasms do more damage, but mind wrack does 10% more damage. These are contradictory. You should try to go either phantasm build or shatter build. There are still different types of each, but “shantasms” don’t work well.

2) Try to act like your clone. Clones don’t dodge. Clones don’t strafe. Go invisible, pop a clone, then BE a clone. Act like the thing that’s trying to act like you =). Too many times I’ll see a mesmer pop stealth, pop a clone, then dodge immediately out of stealth. That mesmer wasted a dodge and a stealth, and I automatically know which is the real mesmer now.

lol! that’s my biggest problem. I can’t help dodging. It’s usually the fastest way of moving and tbh, standing still or even running directly at your enemy (like the clones do) seems to be suicidally stupid. Nevertheless, it’s good advice.

Fortunately, it’s rare to meet anyone who is good at spotting the real mesmer. All you really have to do usually is keep gaining distance and LoS.

Let your phantasms do the work (if you’re playing a phantasm build ofc). Don’t be in too much of a hurry to get the kill, just stay out of the way while your phantasms and clone duke it out with the guy then move in to loot or spawn a fresh illusion depending on the outcome. I often turn off autoattack to avoid drawing attention.
