Hi Friends,

I have a wee bit of a dilemma. I have been playing GW2 off and on for the past few months and after finally being bored to death of WoW and of course my RL mates “harassing” me, I’ve finally decided to sit down and level a character to the max level.

The problem is I am having a tough time deciding on a character to level. I have leveled a Ranger to 43 and a Guardian to 30.

Unfortunately, I have begun to lose interest in these characters as I don’t find it a challenge and (too be honest) I am finding the play style of both, quite boring. It’s been hard to push myself to keep playing either.

As much as my friends hate me rerolling, I’m still trying to find the class that will suit me. My friends have level 80s are are happy to play with me, but they want me up for doing higher level content together.

So I’m stuck on deciding between a thief or a mesmer. I’d be willing to listen to any other advice on other classes… I mainly would like a class that is great for soloing in both PvE and WvW / BGs (I think you guys call it scenario pvp?) and would work well when paired with an elementalist and engineer (for both WvW and PvE).

Also, what is a good race for either? Both my Ranger and Guard are norns (love the look/armor + viking-esque background is awesome) so I was thinking that maybe a change of class and scenery might be called for?

Any advice is appreciated.

I’ve never liked soloing with my mesmer, but I love them for party play. Have you considered an ele?

One of the problems with rangers and guardians to a degree, is that they are just too easy to play in PvE. Mind you, at higher level play, guardians can be quite complex, but not in the open world.

Elementalist, due to the attunements, allow you to switch things up a lot more, and thus they might hold your interest. They do great in WvW and SPvP..there are builds out there that make they really hard to kill, as well as really hard to catch.

But the biggest thing about them is the sheer variety of skills they bring to the table. And you have to watch yourself more carefully at lower levels, because you can die if you’re not careful.

Create character, do initial story quest, go to HoM, test out skills/weapons/traits…play style on the dummies or do the sPvP. Don’t like then delete & try a different one.

Having a level 80 thief and Mesmer myself, and currently leveling a guardian, I gotta say, the guardian ís dull in comparison (at least in pve open word that is)
Thief and Mesmer both come with some handy abilities.
I actually do enjoy solo open world on Mesmer, and dungeons, spvp and WvWvW are even more fun. it’s not uncommon that in dungeons I’m the last one standing if the party wipes.
I got to admit, I’m hardly a good thief player, but none the less I enjoy playing it. There are many different styles in which you can play both classes.

As for the race, go with what you like best if you feel like doing quests/events elsewhere. Nothing is stopping you from doing so, so I wouldn’t pick a race based on where they start out
