Need some profession advices
If the mage aspect of necro attracted you, try a dagger/dagger elementalist.
If you want to be mobile, dish out some good dmg, don’t want to learn too many combos, try Thief (most mobile/acrobaticish Profession ingame). A warming though: it is the squishiest class in the game, pretty much anything can kill you if you’re not paying attention and is not ready to dodge/evade, but for me, that’s exactly why i love the class so much and have been playing it since release
I too am a relatively new player and I hope you won’t take this the wrong way, but I will strongly advise you not to get too involved in this game.
Especially, don’t spend any money on any of the expansions.
It’s actually a really good game, great graphics, some brilliant story play with sensitive and interesting NPCs. Plus some wonderful innovations to smooth things along, such as virtually eliminating the problem of kill stealing.
The big problem with it is, it has become so utterly complicated and finding any decent support or information is almost impossible. This is made all the worse by most players who know what they are doing, being so set in their ways. They push you to the Wiki or other sites that they use and understand, yet are unable to see that you don’t. If you persist too hard they get overly sensitive think you’re being rude. And that’s sad.
Crafting is a significant part of this game as it should be for all of these. While others have tended to reduce or even eliminate its importance, GW2 has maintained crafting as an important function.
Therein lies your first problem. Figuring out how to do it.
Imaging someone learning to drive who knows nothing about a car. They are told to start the ignition, press the throttle, apply the clutch and engage low gear.
What’s ignition, what’s a throttle, what’s a clutch and what’s a gear?
Here, the problem is made worse because most players are so experienced they have become a clique. None seem to understand that new players don’t know anything, not because we are stupid, but because no-one has explained what things are.
You will be repeatedly referred to the wiki. As it stands, it’s OK, but again, so complicated that you are left with more questions than answers.
Using the in-game chat is almost always ignored, inspite of claims to the contrary.
I am quite an experienced game player, WoW, Metin 2, LOTRO, Gekkeiju and others. The issues are common. Elimination of most of the lower level game play so as to rush new players to the higher levels where the profit is to be made from expansions.
GW2 is a good game, probably one of the better of the current generation of adventure games. But the technology is evolving now, more direct player interaction, VR even. Especially, more emphasis on tablets and smart phones.
This generation of adventure games is coming to a close. Most seem to be approaching their endgame stage. I know many are anticipating, winding down in 2018, Turbine for example.
We are in on the tale end here and sadly, the better programmers and game administrators have all moved on.
The reality is, the gaming companies don’t really care now.
Play by all means, but if you don’t buy the latest expansion, you won’t get access to a large area that actually has very little effect upon what is available for free.
You can easily get to lev 85 in the free areas. The only thing you won’t do is glide, which is little more than window dressing really.
I also strongly suggest you stick to the more practical characters, using heavy armour and such. The magical characters seem to be more for support and are really weak.
But as a free player you will have 3 characters. So get a decent warrior or similar, say a Char. then if you fancy it later, you can try a magical character.
You should be dodging and moving out of the way of things on every class but on easier content there is no need to do that on any class.
If you like more mobility mesmer/thief is a good option. If you do not like mindless slugging warrior is probably not for you.
If you have HoT you might also want to give revenant a go.
The dagger/dagger ele is also a good option but it is very fragile/glass cannon so if you are a new player it might get frusttrating.

We have a former WoW player here. * rollseyes *
As a class, thief probably requires and uses the most mobility. However, every class can be depending on how you play your class and what build you use.

Started at the bottom! <cute grin>
necro is a very solid choice for new player:
1) easy rotation
2) almost god mod in pve
! 3) necro speed is good actualy:
necro=>reaper=>F1+2 = dash every 10 (7) seconds
dager +25% speed trait
signet +25% speed
warhorn (with trait is almost uptime)
as an option sigils speed on kill or +33 boon duration warhorn on weapon swap.
But T/ME is faster anyway))), d/x ele is not so fast IMO.
