Q:

AMD FX8120 (8 × 3.1)
ASUS M5A78L-M V2 s.AM3+
8GB DDR3 1333MHz
Nvidia GeForce GT6300

Is that a good setup to run Guild Wars 2 without any fps drops on medium settings?

No.

Invest some more Money in an Intel CPU since GW2 is way to hungry for pure CPU power.

Without knowing your budget and your definition of “good”, the only suggestion I will give is to copy/paste “gw2 cpu benchmarks” into your favorite internet search engine and read some of the information that is available.

You should then be able to make an informed decision that best suits your desires.

I can get Intel i5 core which is 4×3GHz or AMD FX8120 which is 8×3.1. Which one to chose? :c

Get a intel 3570k/2550k And OC to around 4.5ghz. This is the only way to stay abvoe 30 fps no matter what setitngs u use.

graphcis card wise, for medium settings u want atleast a AMD 7770 or Nvida 550ti
Recommend a 560ti/660ti or AMD 7850/7950

Do NOT go AMD with the CPU, their single thread performance is not good enough for GW2 even when OC’d. The only AMD cpu that comes close is the FX 8350 ..but even that will drop below 30fps in WvW.

Right. I’m running an AMD Athlon II X4 3.0, and at this point it’s considered a pile of crap. But, paired up with a 7870, and all settings (except shadows) set to their highest, I run consistently at 30-40 fps except for, of course, high intensity WvW situations. But the rest of the game? Just dandy.

Solar isn’t wrong that an overclocked intel currently leads the curve, but that’s if you’re building a monster gaming rig. Not a computer, a rig. Seeing that you’re shooting for a budget gpu (I assume you meant GT630, not 6300), I take it you’re not about to pay top dollar for the setup, including cooling units capable of handling overclocked hardware. But correct me if I’m wrong there.

That said, more cores does not necessarily equate to more speed. Is it still in your interest to get an intel? Possibly. They are making good stuff right now. But it’s not like AMD has nothing to offer. Check out benchmarks, pay attention to clock speeds, think about your budget, pick whatever fits the best. If you aren’t pushing for top-dollar setups, you have a lot of options.

Indeed my advice was taking to account worst situation worst fps u will ever see. In GW2’s case .. BIG WvW battles.

if ur not interested in WvW, or dont mind droping to 10fps or so. Then a AMD or Stock clocked Intel CPU would be fine.

FYI, u dont need to spend much on cooling to be able to OC. A Coolmaster Evo 212 is about £30/$35.

Look at this list , get the best u can that is OC’able and OC.

And what about GeForce GTX650? Is it good enough?

Depends on what qualifies as “good enough”. The game definitely prioritizes the processor. In fact, out of date graphics cards do pretty well. I was running a Radeon HD 5770 up until recently (two generations out, mid-low end card), and ran the game on medium/highish settings with, what I felt, was very acceptable frame rates (20-30) for such an old card.

My guess is that it will run the game acceptably well, with occasional hiccups in difficult areas depending on your settings. If you’re looking for for something to max out the game in all areas, you probably need a step up.

If you’d like to pretend WoW can make for a similar benchmark test to GW2, here’s the Tom’s Hardware gtx 650 benchmarks. Hopefully that helps. Also, remember, anytime you check out benchmark postings, take a close look at the game settings and the hardware for the rest of their test rig. It’ll undoubtedly be a little different from what you plan to use, which can create variations on the result.

I just want to play WvW even on low settings with a 30-40 fps. Can you tell me if it is possible with i5 3470, 8GB RAM and GTX650??

A Intel 3470 ..no.

A Intel 3570k WIth OC ..yes

The problem with wanting no lower than 30 fps is, not matter what gpu u get ..fast or slow ..the cpu is going to be what matters most in GW2.

To stay above 30 fps in WvW on Low or Max settings, you need a 2nd generation Intel i5 K or better And OC to around 4.5ghz. If you do that then not only will ur ‘average’ fps be more like 45fps in WvW ..ur ‘lowest’ fps will not drop below 30 …and thats the big issue ..‘minimum’ fps..u dont want the minimum fps to drop below 30.

A 650 would be a bit low imo ..a 650ti would be better.
Even a 550ti would be slightly better.
If u look around u may even be able to find a 460 for around the same price and that would better than the 650,550ti, and 550… and would be As good as a 650ti.

Even still if u have no choice then the 650 non ti it would still play GW2 on medium i would think, leaving room to lower settings to Low if it ever gets bogged down.

It would be best to give a budget on the GPU so we can better find one that matches the budget and the perfomance required. Or a budget for the whole computer.

It’s hard to say because I’m from Poland. Currency and the prices are different. I can say that my budget is pretty low but I would like to play WvW with that 30 fps. If you could give me here the lowest specs that could reach this point it would be awesome.

30fps minimum in WvW requirs a beafy CPU and it needs to be OC’d.
So a spec list for 30 fps medium/high settings WvW would be as follows:

Intel i5 3570K or 2500k/2550k
Asus or Gigabyte LGA 1155 motherboard
Coolmaster Evo 212 Cooler or Noctua NH-D14
OverClock to around 4.5ghz.
G.Skill (if using Noctua cooler) or Corsair RAM 8 or 12gb 1600mhz.
Nvidia 650ti graphics card
Corsair 600W PSU

Shouldnt be as expensive and some ppl think but nor will it be really cheap.

You could save maybe £10/$10 by buying cheap RAM,
and maybe $30/£30 by getting a lower end graphics card like a AMD 7770 ..but the performance drop would be to substantial imo, and thus not worth it.

I have modest setup with an I3 with AMD7750 and, at max setings, the GPU runs at full while the ‘four’ processor cores do not.

@ frans.

Yes well it would run at full with those settings. The 7750 isnt a very good gaming GPU nowerdays and trying to run GW2 on max graphics settings with it is a bit silly tbh.

Even a 560ti which is ALOT more powerfull , will hit max usuage when running Max settings in GW2 in areas like LionsArch.
