An Epic 80 in every flavor (Five Thousand Finishers)
Q:
Hey Guys,
Just started playing GW2 a day ago and I really love this game so far. I was wondering if you had any advice for a newbie as he explores this vast world. I started out with an Asuran Thief.
A:
Take what you read on most of these forums with a grain of salt too. There are an awful lot of whiners out here, so make sure you think about what you’re reading and don’t just take it at face value. If it sounds more negative that you would reasonably expect- it’s probably just somebody being a crybaby. Most of the class guides posted by various members of the community are written objectively and you’ll be able to get a lot of good hints and tips from them, but ultimately you’re best bet is to take your time testing all your weapons and skills to find the ones that suit your personal play style the best. And then, as you continue to level, you will be introduced to other types of equipment that further enhance that style.
Also, don’t be afraid to respec your traits on a regular basis as it’s fairly cheap (3s 50c at lvl 80). Traits are designed to ENHANCE your playstyle, NOT DICTATE how you play. This is important to remember. Choosing a “healing” or “tanking” trait line will not make you a healer or tank because those concepts simply don’t exist in this game. “Hybrid builds” are all too common and you are encouraged to try out any combination of trait you so desire. Continuing along those lines, carry multiple sets of equipment (both for experimentation and adaptation purposes).
And finally. The biggest favor you can do for yourself is to carry a decent version of every weapon your profession has access to at all times. I know that goes along with “various sets of equipment” but i feel that this in particular is worth noting because the type of weapon you have equipped will determine your first five attack skills and will vary greatly between weapons. There is no such thing as a “bad” weapon, but certain weapons are quite frankly just “better” for certain situations.
Beyond that- Good Hunting! have fun, make friends and just in general, make GW2 a fun diversion (not a chore).

And good hunting out there.
Make sure to explore Rata Sum, and try and complete as many waypoints, points of interest, and jumping puzzles as you can. Do Hearts to level up, and watch out for Events, because most are not easily solo’able, and there aren’t a lot of people out in the world at low levels these days.
Also, look at the Thief profession forum if you want to know more about Thiefy type stuff.
Cheers.
My best advice for a new player is to take it slow and enjoy the ride. This game is (at least in the PvE parts) about exploration and discovery, and there’s an amazing world here to experience. To each their own, but I personally think it would be a shame to race through everything to try to reach an “end game” that doesn’t actually exist.
Safe travels, and enjoy the journey!

Heh, a lot of the endgame is basically just going back to the beginning game to catch up on all the stuff you missed the first time around. Your level will scale down to just a little above the level of the area you are in. So even at level 80, you’re not completely wasting your time by going back to a level 2 area as you will effectively be a lvl 4 and there will still be some level of challenge. This also affords you the opportunity to help your friends that are leveling alts or someone else that is completely new to the game without feeling like you are completely wasting your time!
Another basic is to be sure to keep a set of gathering tools equipped. Gather every plant, tree and ore node you come across! You’ll get experience for your effort, you’ll stock your mat supply for crafting and/or have mats to sell for in game cash at the trading post.
This was incredibly helpful. Thanks guys!
