I just recently downloaded GW2 in hopes to play it with a good friend of mine. He forgot to mention that the server he plays on, Blackgate, is full at the moment.

I’m very interested in WvW so yes, I would like to play on the same server he does. I’ve read about multiple people claiming to wait until “off-time” to try and secure a spot on the full server and I’ve also read about once the server is full, I must wait until people actively transfer off of the server for it to be accessible.

Can anyone clear this up for me? If the server is truly full than I’ll simply make my characters elsewhere and transfer once it becomes available.

Once a popular server becomes Full, it often stays Full. You can take the chance to wait and see if it dips under to Very High, but it may be weeks.

Or you can join another Server and play with your friend everywhere except WvW, and transfer when the population caps are raised again. You can do so with a cost (in Gems), or at no cost (by deleting all your characters).

Well I’ll be hopeful for the next 24 hours and see if I get lucky. After that I suppose I’ll just get started and transfer later. Does a server need to be down from full before I can transfer over?

Yes, you can only transfer when a server is not full.
