Hello! New player here! Was looking for a new mmo without a subscription and from what I have to choose from this fit my needs. I just happened to be at gamestop looking to spend some xmas gift cards and they happen to have a left over collectors edition so I picked it up. I have not choosen a home world yet… Any suggestions for a east coaster? I have been a wow player for 7 years and finally tired of feeling like I always have to play catch up :-(. Unfortunally I have to work today till 10 but have all day tomorrow off so I figured I would get some forum time in and introduce myself and see a good home world to possibly join! Look forward to meeting some of you in game!

Welcome to the game. Sadly, the forums are filled with rage, but it’s not really a good indicator of the actual game.

If you get the chance, add me in game. I tend to give free tutorials in Queensdale once per week. Or you can just ask any questions on here XD.

You’d better socialize with ingame contacts and find a guild. No need for large ones as they don’t provide heavy bonuses, find a nice one that’s not full of elitist farmers or w/e and you’ll get along fine. Having friends and contacts is key here as the game tends to punish PUGs a little.

Welcome to Tyria! c:
Keep in mind your home world choice is not permanent. The most populated servers are difficult to get into (Tarnished Coast, Jade Quarry, Stormbluff Isle) as they’re almost always of full status, but they’re going to be your best bet for a large in-game community. I’m not sure about after you initially make a character and choose a home world, but the wait time between switching servers is 7 days and server transfers are currently free. If you’re interested in roleplaying, TC has be unofficially dubbed the rp server by the players. However, as I’m a TC player myself, I can say that there’s also plenty of non-rpers if you’d rather not. If you see a full server, other players have suggested checking at very early morning hours to see if there’s space.

Welcome to all the new players.

As far as full vs very high or even high, you will probably find amazing communities on any server, so I wouldnt worry as much about that. In fact, you would be doing the future of the game a favor by not trying to cram into an already packed server. I have been on Henge of Denravi (www.hengeofdenravi.com), one of the “not-full” servers, since beta and the people there are extremely helpful and friendly. We’ve had to pull together and stick together to remain competitive and involved. We may have a harder time with activites that involve really large numbers, but this has created an atmosphere that is extremely open and friendly to new players.

Anyone is welcome here.

And Nooga – we are currently paired against SF in WvW (as well as GoM). Its an awesome (and very close) match. You picked a good server as well.

Lack of subscription: you’ve found your game.

Finally free of playing “catch up”: Turn right around and return it.

Ascending gear. Descending game.

Whoa whoa, wait a second. Until today, there is no actual “treadmill” as there are only few Ascended items and you won’t hit the point where you need them before you have them already, so as of now, no need to return it.
Sadly, I guess in half a year you’re not that far from being right. Still a fun half year I suppose.

Sadly, Im playing in the Mac beta and, for me at least, every time I get into WvW I crash

Hopefully they will get all of those problems worked out soon so I can try the PvP

First of all, welcome to GW2, you have picked a good game In fact, it is the only MMO to have ever really held my attention for a sustained period. The game still needs to be tweaked, it’s not perfect, but they have done so much right.
As to servers, I was lucky enough to get on TC when I first bought the game shortly after launch. It is a really great server with a fairly mature community. I am typically wary of PUGs, but so far I have only had one bad experiences, and I think that says something about the server population. So… good luck in your current choice, I hear SF is a decent place to be as well, and if ever space opens on TC and you feel inclined, it’s also a good bet.

And, as has been mentioned, ignore the moaning, whining and overall toxicity of these forums. The happy people are playing the game rather than griping.

Not sure if it’s possible to return the game or not. I forget if you needed to put the key in to get the forum account… But if it’s possible to return the game, do some research before getting installed and everything, watch videos, read player reviews, get a real solid idea of both the good and the bad to the game, and decide from there. This game is NOT for everyone, you can love it, or you can think that it was the hugest waste of money ever.

But if you can’t return it, and you end up hating the game, just keep following the updates and everything, the one luxury about this game is that you can just get right back into it at any time for free, at least for now. If paid expansions pile up, then it might cost some more money.

I have been a wow player for 7 years and finally tired of feeling like I always have to play catch up :-(.

Up until November I would have gladly recommended you this game.

Unfortunately Arena Net has decided to introduce gear progression just like in WoW, and it was apparently planned all along while selling hundreds of thousands game copies on the promise that there would be no gear progression. In my eyes Arena Net has sunk really low, and the vertical progression introduced seems to serve no purpose at all but to make people angry.

That being said, your first 50-100 hours of this game will probably be the best investment you have ever made. If you plan to invest yourself personally and emotionally in the game however, I wouldn’t recommend quitting WoW until you see what is going to happen in January and February. Alleged “huge” patches happening then will make or break the game I think.

Why does nobody ever warn these newbs to Avoid the blinkered fanboys???

The only things allowed are “Fixed grins” and “fluffy bunnies tattoos”. Ms Langford must play here.

We’ll stop to sleep when the game is the best possible game we think it can be.
We’ve been awake since March 2007! Please help!

there will be no gear treadmill in GW2. all they did was add 1 extra tier of gear because they felt that the jump between legendary and exotic is to long ( witch it is tbh) once all the ascended items are out there will be no more gear tiers. ( atm there is only rings and back pieces 3/14 pieces in the ascended tier) yes more will be added but that is planed and once you have the ascended gear you will never need a upgrade tier. they have stated this here on the forum and on their official blogg. Stop telling people that there is a treadmill.

They said that “for now” they won’t add any more tiers. Besides, considering they have gone back on their word again and again and again why do you trust them?

Many people trusted them when they said that there would be nothing like Ascended gear too.

There was no gap statwise that would have justified increased stats comparing asc and exo gear, plus it’s gonna be a content blocker if they extend asc to full item sets. As of now, it’s no grind, you’ll get the rings pretty easy, but it won’t stay like that I fear.
So what makes you think they won’t add another tier to reduce the gap between asc and legendary? or even a higher tier than legendary because 5% of all players will have legendaries one day?

It’s gonna be a worthwhile investment for the next months, but I would recommend keeping a distance as the course isn’t clear.

One tip. Dont surf around forums trying to find ’ best class ’ Pick one fitting you and even if you pick wrong several times its easy to catch on in GW2.

Took me a month and 4 different toons to realised what im supposed to play in this game.

GuildWars 2 is good game with bad management.

It’s not a very big treadmill, and it won’t be as long as they keep it as is.

Some folks are arglebargling over fractals, but they’re planning on seeding that gear all over the game.

Welcome to the game all new players! Hope you all come to enjoy and love this game as much as the rest of us. If any of you find yourselves in Sanctum of Rall server, look me up, or just PM me anytime in game or here. I’m always willing to help out players new and old alike. Also listen to these people in this thread, many wise words have been spoken. Don’t dig too deep in the forums, lots of hate-posts going around from spoiled players and it’s not at all indication of the true game (same thing for most game-forums). Don’t get stuck on one class, try them all out (or as many as you have slots for until you get more). This game is flexible enough to allow any type of gamer to enjoy it. And don’t worry about being “behind” from everyone else that has been playing since launch. Progression is really fast in this game if you want it to be. Main thing is, have fun! Plenty of it to be had!
