Hello,

So I am brand new at this game. Just got a pc. The only MMO I ever played was DCUO on my ps3 so I understand the MMO terms and get the whole concept.. I currently have a human, But where are the factions? Like good vs evil..

If I ever did team up with someone do we have to be the same race? And if I am correct every class can be a healer?

Do a lot of people play this game? I hope so I just spent 60 bucks lol..

I was a healer on dcuo just got bored of the game same thing over and over again and the devs just didn’t care!

Also, what are the classes?

Tank, DPS, healer and controller? Just curious

Thanks!

There are no player good/evil factions as such. The game is designed to have the player characters be on the good side. Or at least to have enough enlightened self interest to know that it’s better to work together to fight the dragons than to attack each other while the world is turned to an unliving ruin. There are definitely tensions as the Charr and Humans were in all out war until a treaty a year or two ago. But none of the five races are at war with the others.

This means you can team up with anyone of any race. Choice of race affects very little in the game beyond aesthetics and the start of one’s Personal Story. Racial skills are more for flavor than game changers. Norn and Charr have some issues with jump puzzles due to their bulk, though.

Every profession can heal, yes. But no one can heal friends enough to only heal in a fight, that’s a losing proposition. You are meant to heal yourself. Caveat: My guardian has an elite skill that heals the whole party up to full, but has a 3 minute cooldown and takes a few seconds of channeling time.

Several million copies sold in this game, my server is the unofficial US RP server so it’s always vibrantly full. Yes, a lot play!

There are no tanks/healers/dpsers as such. This game has no trinity. Every profession does all three, sometimes on the fly in one fight. That being said, guardians tend more to support and thieves more to pure damage with very little support. It’s all in how you build your character’s traits and gear, and which weapon sets you choose.

The only faction combat is Server Vs Server called World Vs World Vs World, where three servers fight over four maps in a siege war variant of capture the flag. Progress here unlocks bonuses on your server that all players benefit in. Of course you still have PvP but not in the open PvE world.

It’s not that every class is a healer, every class gets heals (3 actually but only one can be assigned at a time). Some “professions” (classes elsewhere) have AoE heals/regen and everyone can revive a downed player or NPC.

The help system in the game is the official wiki (see wiki link at top of screen). It will provide a lot of answers to your basic questions about professions, race, skills, traits, etc. It also has some very detailed maps of the world.

The traditional MMO triad doesn’t really exist in this game. Neither is the need to be a member of a formal party, most of the time. It’s more personal quests or random (well not really random) events that are “flash mobbed” to complete. Everyone is a jack of all trades although some professions may favor a little bit melee or range, burst or DoT and single or AoE.

You never outlevel an area. Your level will be adjusted to match the critters in your current area. So will your armor and weapons however better quality armor and weapons will still be helpful as well as traits.

The game is designed to eliminate the need to compete with other players in the open world. Everyone is eligible for loot assuming you at least helped during the event. Resource nodes are instanced so no mad rush to get there first. Just about everything you do will give you XP from gathering resources to rezing fallen Players/NPCs to simple wandering into a new area.

There are features that allow you to shunt all crafting materials to the bank without needing to be near one. Also you can sell items on the games TP without the need to haul butt back to a representative (but you do need to see one to collect you money or items you bought off the TP).

There is a sticky thread at the top of this board labeled “OMG If you only knew this” full of useful tips.

That should get you going. Remember, the wiki is your friend.

Thank everyone for the helpful tips! This will come in handy! I was surprised at how many classes there were and skills.. I am already using the wiki very helpful!

Just one more tip. To do the world vs wolrd events do I have to be max level? Or is Ed game content for all the levels? Is max level 80?

Max level is currently 80. You can enter WvW at any level and it will scale your stats up to 80, but it will not scale your weapons or armour so you will never be as ‘powerful’ as an actual level 80 with level 80 gear. You also will not necessarily have access to a full set of utilities or an elite skill as these unlock as you level. I have levelled characters in WvW as have many people, my advice if under level 80 is to stick with the zerg

You can do WvW straight away, you get levelled upto 80…however you will die very, very easy…

I think level 30 is about the minium I would go into WvW, you should have your elite skill by then, it costs 10 skill points so at about 20th level start saving 10. Also make sure you have every piece of equipment on your character equal to your level, up grade every 5 levels. Make sure you have runes in all your armour and sigils in all your weapons and jewels or crest in all your trinkets. Finally, have both apple & spanner buffs. If you do all that then going into WvW at 30th level is very doable…

Ahh I miss DCUO. Might have to dust it off. Welcome to GW2 Cooper. Hope you have fun. The game has a lot to offer for awhile. Certainly worth the 60 bucks IMO.

I recommend playing the PvE content. Questing/leveling/storyline. It can be pretty fun. Save the PvP and WvW stuff for later after you get the hang of the game and need a break from PvE.
