New Player Could Use Some Advice
I found a page loaded with tips that you might find useful: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Tips
As far as Mesmer goes, that class probably has a higher learning curve than many. It also can feel under-powered until it reaches max level. It is definitely a fun class though and if you don’t mind a little extra challenge then you should certainly play the class you find the most interesting. Mesmer is great at a lot of things and can find groups in many game modes.
The worst piece of advice I ever receive on playing RPGs was to always make my first character a human fighter (in this game that’d be a warrior) because they’re simpler to play and therefore better for learning the game. It is usually true that they’re simpler, but I also find them quite boring and if I’d followed that advice I’d probably give up on most of the games I play.
I’d say if Mesmer is the one that appeals to you then go for it. It is true that they’re harder to play, especially at low levels, than some professions but they’re not actually bad, and it means you have to pay more attention to what you’re doing.

Well I am in the process of developing a Mesmer myself, but it is my seventh character. I started with a Human Ranger. My second is an elementalist, but in actuality I would suggest a Norn Worrier. Much easer to develop and you get a different perspective on the story line. Also to get the full story line develop people that come from urchin, middle class and Nobel. That way you get all the story lines.
Best of luck and most importantly HAVE FUN.
