Hiya, Old GW player, new GW2 player – got it for Christmas (Yeay!)
Seen a lot of “Oh god, I’m totally lost” threads as I’ve been lurking these forums so I thought I’d post up my learning process in the short time I’ve been playing to see if it helped anyone.
First impression is that there is a LOT of information. Im playing a Silvari Engineer and Im currently exploring the Caledon Forest area. So I start my char, get a feel for the movement, quickly browse the screen for all the symbols, note the map, the skills, inventory, missions sections. Everything I click on leads to something else, but I havent got time to sit and read it all – I wanna play!! I go an talk to Caithe and get thrust into the first personal story mission and I end up in the main Caledon Forest area ankittenold to go help people.
This seems very vague, the map is huge, there are loads of symbols everywhere and I dont even know if I’ve got a weapon. This is where my learning curve properly kicks in and my advise to new players is this: Wiki is your friend. Take some time out to learn what all the symbols mean, and how the events work – it takes a bit of getting used to, its not ur standard “Talk to this dude, and he’ll tell you where to go”
Read the Wiki on how the skill tree works for you char, how you get them etc. Then just run around exploring the hell out of everything. The only thing Im finding is that its time consuming and I get a bit lost in the labyrinth of trying to find all the points. Theres a lot of information coming at you all the time, so its not a quick game to pick up, you need to take your time and figure all the little bits out. I’ve not even gone back to my main personal story yet – im still figuring out what everything does.
So yeah advise – if you dont know something; wiki it and READ it – dont scan through it. Read some of the starter threads on the forum and follow the advise and pointers given – some really helpful tips on there that often you dont figure out yourself. Take your time and LEARN the feel and rhythm of the game. Its so open ended initially, you dont feel like you’re getting anywhere, but I think thats just the dynamics of learning a new play system until you’re ready and leveled up to move on.
