Q:
New Player! - Need help with proffessions
Hi and welcome, looking to your profile, I would suggest you start the game playing a warrior. If you like good looking armors, warrior and guardian is the way to go but the guardian is more of a support character. Plus the warrior is a great dps and is enjoyable solo and in group.
Stay away from elementalist and mesmer for the beginning, they are classes that require a bit more knowledge to really enjoy.
If you are more of a ranged player, I’d suggest you go for a ranger, but do not expect too much from the look of its armor.
The professions do avoid the usual trinity in some way but you still need a bit of everything in a group and so there still is a way to build your character toward more dps or more defense. Healers are a bit more tricky to build though.
I have heard that they back away from the MMO trinity, but I can’t quite see how. Can an elementalist heal other players? Can a Necromancer keep the enemy focused on himself?
Thanks very much for replying!
I have sort of narrowed it down to a warrior, thief and ranger.
But still not sure. Lol its very hard to choose.
Also sorry another follow up question, What races look the best in some of the nicer looking armor skins?
Thanks
You can use this site to see various level 80 exotic armours, dungeon and cultural sets and a few karma sets on different race/gender models. It doesn’t show you all of the lower level armour sets that drop from mobs or come from crafting but chances are by the time you get to 80 you will want something off this list for your character.

Welcome!
Every profession has skills in all three categories: damage, support and control. You can read on them if you wish, if not it basicly mean that every character can deal damage, hinder the enemy and heal themselves and others. The degrees vary both from prefesion to profession and build to build.
Now, I know you will be told to pick certain professions and not others. Some may be a little harder to get started with than others, but nothing is impossible. Dying is not a big deal in this game or perhaps we don’t actually die when we get defeated, since we can resurrect. Anyway, the best professions are the ones that interest you. If you think a certain profession looks and sounds cool, believe in yourself. You can play any of these classes. (I like all six I am currently playing. Most surprised I was with engineer as that did not interest me at the start. I have not tried Warrior or Thief yet.)
Armor is divided in three categories: Light (Mesmer, Necromancer, Elementalist), Medium (Ranger, Engineer, Thief) and Heavy (Warrior and Guardian). Any armor in the category is usable by any of the professions it is made for. What looks cool is quite another thing though. What I like may be what you hate and vice versa. Take a look at the pictures yourself at Guild Wars 2 Armor Gallery.
Any profession can make it alone. Not without ever being defeated probably, but they can make it and mostly win. Learn to kite and dodge if you haven’t yet!
Parties are only required at dungeons, which are obligatory. While you don’t have to dedicate your character to keeping others alive, do lend a downed/defeated sister or brother a hand sometime. Not only is it a nice thing to do, but the game even rewards it with xp.
If you are going for a heavy armor, Char, Human and Norn will be best because I don’t think the armors look great on the smaller ones.
For James, they “get rid” of the trinity mainly because there is no class able to tank without moving and also because all classes can be great dps. Elementalist are actually amongst the best healers but I see what you were meaning. Not all class can do everything, but each of them can bring something interesting to a group, that is not as clearly defined as the usual trinity.
I’d say the concept of the trinity still holds, because you will nearly always head for support, damage or defense, but not in the way most MMOs have used it. This is good mainly because strategies are less revolving around the same old concept.
