Just bought the game, trying to figure out which server to play on and one that I could possibly get my desired name. Apparently I’m too dumb to figure out why I cannot pick a server to actually start on.

Currently its only letting me pick Darkhaven. Trying to research which server would be good to start on – apparently this is my only option and cannot get any of the 15 names I use in games. Very very frustrating and I havent even played yet.

You’ve hit on two differences between this game and some other MMOs.

1) All of your characters are on the same server. You can transfer to a different one but it moves all your characters together. Alternatively you can use the Guesting function to play PvE (and PvP? I’m not sure, definitely not WvW) on any other server in your region.

2) Because of guesting names are not server specific, if they’re taken then they’re taken on every server in the game.

If the names you’re trying to use are taken there are a few options:

  • Use an alternate spelling
  • Add a last name (or first name) or title
  • Use a different language
  • Use a variation on the theme

Obviously not all those will work with all names, but it gives you some options. For example I’ve hit problems with 3 of my characters:
1) Alleria Windrunner is apparently not as obscure as I’d thought, so I had to use Alleria Wildrunner instead (Alleria Windruner also worked but I didn’t like that as much).
2) Xixxi, my asuran name, was taken so I changed it to Xexxi.
3) I wanted to call a character Holly but this was in GW1 where you had to have at least 2 parts to a name, and everything I could think of pairing it with was taken. So I switched to latin and got Ilex Hedera (holly ivy).

Danielle Aurorel, Dear Dragon We Got Your Cookies [Nom], Desolation (EU).

So in other words this game determines where you are placed and have to PAY to move. Sounds like a lovely waste of more money to me. Glad I forked over money for another game thats completely not worth the effort.

Cheers.

That is incorrect.

You are allowed one home server for all your characters and you can guest to 2 other servers per day.

If you wish to transfer your characters to a different home server you have two option. One is to delete any characters you have made (character names are reserved to your account for 24 hours after character deletion). Make another character and you will then have the option to chose a new home server, for free. No gems. Or pay gems to transfer your characters.

From the wiki:
Transferring servers
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Server
“The transfer fee is only charged if you have characters on your account; in other words, if your account has no characters or you delete all existing characters first, you will be prompted to select a new home world after creating a new character, free of charge.

To transfer to a different world, go to the character selection screen (using F12 or when you first logon) and select the desired world; you will be logged out while the game makes these changes, which might take 5-30 minutes. You can transfer once every seven days at a cost determined by the destination server population and whether or not you have characters".

If you have characters the fees are:
Medium: 500
High: 1000
Very High: 1800

Yea I’ll just take a refund. Thanks for the info I suppose.

Quite possible the worst MMO ive tried to start up on – holy kitten is this ever a completely un-user friendly / new game to start. Jesus.

Idk about all games but I suspect most charge to transfer servers. I have read that WoW charges $20 per character to transfer. Some people there spend $200 dollars or more to transfer.

Anyway, I hope you find a game that suits you better.

I don’t understand your problem. If you don’t like the server you have chosen you can delete your characters and go to another one for free. This would not be a problem since you’re new anyway. Why is this an issue for you?

Be sure not to come back ^^ We really don’t need a negative player such as yourself complaining about something that isn’t even a problem.
