New Player looking for some tips and tricks
Might want to check out https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/OMG-If-you-only-knew-this-tips-for-new-players first.
As for getting gold, worry about that when you hit 80.
As for leveling do what you like. If that happens to be killing stuff, kill the neutral(yellow) mobs. Often they have a huge bonus exp(up to 250% of their base). Gathering also gives a lot of exp. For any given area a single swing of the gathering tool will give more than the base exp of a mob in the same area.
Questing in this game is done by coming near a quest area, as opposed to clicking on NPCs and accepting a quest from them.
Quest areas are indicated by hearts on the minimap, and by orange circles of what we call dynamic events
Don’t worry about gold making, just upgrade your gear every 5-10 levels or so. You’ll get plenty of gold and other currency when you level.
Here’s something interesting for new players. You’re probably past this point already but someone really new without a wallet full of cash might find it useful.
When you finish the tutorial, you come into the world with exactly the amount of copper coins needed to buy one each of the three gathering tools. Get them from a nearby vendor/merchant and gather from every node you come across, they’ll more than pay for themselves in no time.

First thing first: Take your time. There is very little in this game that you can’t do before level 80 if you want to, so there’s no reason to rush through levelling. Equally when you’re at level 80 all the content, even in the starter zones, is still playable so you don’t need to worry about missing out on anything.
Secondly questing is very different in this game. The only traditional quests are your Personal Story. There’s not many of them and the level requirements will jump up between quests so you can’t focus entirely on them.
Instead you want to use the Renown Hearts (aka heart quests) to guide yourself around the map. These function sort of like traditional side quests – collect this, kill that, defend my whatever from angry wildlife etc. except that you can start doing them as soon as you’re in the area instead of talking to the NPC first and you have a choice of tasks to do, you can do a bit of everything or focus on the bits you find interesting (or easiest). When it’s done you’ll get rewarded with XP, karma and money (via an in-game mail).
Both of those however are just ways to get you moving around the map. What you really want to be doing for XP and money is Dynamic Events. These will start up either randomly, on a timer or after being trigged in some way and show up on the map and Event Assistant (which is apparently the correct name for the list of tasks in the top right of your screen) in orange.
The content is also similar to traditional quests, but more action orientated – defending locations against waves of enemies, defending NPCs on their way to/from locations, attacking locations etc. The difference is that they start up and carry on whether you (or anyone else) are there or not. You can join in and leave at any time and you’ll be rewarded based on your level of participation. These are your main way of getting money, loot and XP so you’ll want to do them whenever you see them.
But you’ll also want to do a bit of everything else too. Gathering crafting materials from nodes, finding vistas and points of interest, looking for hidden chests and puzzles…everything gives XP so it’s all worth doing even if you’re not interested in that particular content.
Oh also, while you’re levelling try to get most of your new equipment from drops, personal story rewards and heart quest NPCs. Save your gold for other things. You don’t need the best of the best gear to get by and it’s a waste of money to keep buying it when you’ll only need to change it in a few levels.

one other small thing: after finishing a Dynamic Event, if you’re not in a hurry stick around for a couple of minutes. Some DE’s chain up. It might only be one follow-up event, it could be a longer chain. Some chain up to world bosses that require other players to complete.
When using a ‘shout’ skill, for added affect actually shout the phrase at the screen to enhance your gaming experience and feel like a true hero.

I’m sure you might be past this but NEVER join a guild that makes you rep 100% of the time. theres a reason u can join up to 5 guilds. and leaders who force ppl to do that r just powerhungry.
Also try everything. Even if you dont hink you will like it there is a chance you might.
Music and friends. Lots of both. You’ll get bored quickly without something ot make the game go by.

Your character already does that. :P

I disagree. It really depends on what you as a player want from your guild.
If you’re in one or more specialised guilds, for example a PvP team or a dedicated WvW guild then yes I agree it’d be silly for them to insist that you represent 100% of the time.
But if you’re in a casual guild where one of the main benefits is having a group of people to chat to wherever you are, or people who can jump in and help you with whatever you happen to be doing then you need everyone to be representing or it doesn’t work. People who aren’t representing and therefore can’t see guild chat may as well not be there in those types of guilds.
But this is why IMO it’s good that there’s relatively little pre-set structure to guilds, it lets each group decide what they want to do and how they want to operate. As a result you can find any type of guild you want and there’s no need to worry about how the others choose to operate.
I can be in my one guild that requires me to represent 100% of the time, and I can be happy with that because it means I know whenever I log in there will be people in guild chat to talk to, and you can be in your 2-5 guilds and representing them only as and when you want to.

Here’s my two gold pieces worth:-
Get used to the Black Lion Trading Post.
You’ll pick up a lot of stuff as you go along and need to get rid of a lot of it. You’ll be tempted to just vendor it to one of the many ‘merchants’ standing around – DON’T!
Some of it is really quite valuable so check to see if you can sell it for serious cash on the TP – and don’t just take the best purchase offer ( a lot of people are trying to buy cheap to sell high). Always list it at ‘match lowest seller’.
When you need to buy something, be sure to reverse that and make an offer – don’t just accept the price you’re given.
It will take a while to close each deal that way – but you’ll end up a lot richer.
And try out WvW early, you don’t need to be level 80 to compete. It can be a good way to level – much kitten ring than PvE.
Oh, almost forgot. There’s an entire sticky thread dedicated to providing tips for new players: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/players/OMG-If-you-only-knew-this-tips-for-new-players

Heh … that is something to pay attention to. Especially while you are low level. Usually you would expect a lv1 blue drop to be more or less worthless. In GW2 however a lv1 blue drop might sell for more than a lv80 rare! o_O
