Hey everyone,

I am currently waiting for my MAC client to install and am super excited to get into the game. I have been doing a lot of research to try and give myself an edge but I have to ask the most nebbish question ever.

Being new to GW I need to ask which class should I role. Generally I love MAGE like characters, but I’d like a char who can excel in PVP. Please chime In as I am more than happy to listen to suggestions. I am Open to any class, I just want to enjoy playing them and be able to do well enough in PVP to help out.

Also if there are any guides about the race and class please post them also.

Thanks a million

Welcome!
I wish I could guve you the actual advice you seek, but I have never played PvP and most likely never will. However, I have read what others say and think that you might consider mesmer.

Since you are a newbie, (WELCOME!), I have to ask if you mean sPvP or WvW. As they are completely different.

The good news for you is since you said you like mages, eles are great for both. A bunker build (high def/healing) is the only viable ele sPvP build, however WvW has a couple. You could be an auramancer, def build, or glass cannon.

Necromancers are the other type of “mage” in this game and are very good in WvW. However they aren’t that viable in sPvP.

Feel free to send me a message if you have more questions or want more info. Also feel free to roam around the class section (eles have some of the best guides thanks to dapheonix) and see what people are saying.

Last tip: don’t go ranger

RIP in peace Robert

Hello!
Elementalist or, like Garambola said, Mesmer.
Elementalist have the ability to swap between elements’s skills, Mesmer is very versatile but also not very newbie friendly in PvP. Anyway you can try both directly in sPvP since you’re full stats when you go into the Mysts.
About the professions guides just google GW2builds or go to the official wiki for a brief panoramic.

Number 1 rule apparently, if it’s too good to be true, don’t do it. Or it’s an exploit and you will be permanenetly banned for it without warning.

On a happier note, there are a lot of stickied hot threads on what you need to know to start out. Cheers.

Thank you for all the info, Im guessing when you say ELES you mean elemtentalist? and I am not sure the difference between WvWvW and SPVP can someone explain. I am looking to this game to be my long term one, and am excited to play. Also is there a race in specific to chose with ELE. and are both ELE and Meser easy to use in PVE?

Thanks again

WvW = World vs World.

WvW is massive server vs server combat. The main objective of this game mode is to dominate the landscape by capturing all available bases and supply depots by constructing siege weapons to tear down the walls and gates. Supply is required to construct upgrades on buildings and to build siege weapons, supply can be obtained from supply depots and keeps.

sPVP = Structured Player vs Player

sPVP is more arena based combat with 8v8 or 5v5 capturing points within a level and earning the score limit (500) first or having the most points when the time limit runs out. Elementalist is probably one of the easier classes for starting out in my opinion mostly because there aren’t very new concepts to learn that can be overwhelming to a player like for instance with a Mesmer or Engi.

Message me if you need more info.

SPvP is played in teams of five (someone, correct me if I am wrong), small teams. InWvWvW volunteers from whole servers clash together.

All races are equally good for any profession. Pick the one that sounds the most fun or looks the best to you.

I have a mesmer and an Elementalist arong lvl 45 now. In the early stages Mesmer is easier to keep alive in PvE in my experience, but both are fun to play. Dying isn’t really that big a deal in PvE, so don’t let that decide for you.

Both Mesmer and Elementalist are late blooming classes. They really only come to their own after level 30. That does not mean they aren’t viable, it is just that the best skills open up late.

Whatever you choose, have fun with it and stick to it past the very first few levels. It is worth it giving them a real chance.

Have you made sure your computer is strong enough to play Gw2 ..more specificaly its WvW ? Sounds to me you like pvp ..in which case ur likely used to smooth framerates. .somthing that is not easy to get in WvW.

As for classes. Well if u like mage classes then Elementalist is the class for u. Its rather weak early on since it takes alot of its strengths from traits which u dont fully get into till ur mid levels. However once ur there and once u masters its Elements/attunments and can switch between them. You can pvp and pve like a champ.

I been watching videos about eles and to b e honest I am worried that I may be overwhelmed with all the switching forms and mastering spells for each element. Is this the case, or does it come quite easily? Also I have been looking at the mesmer and they seem fun how do they fair in sPVP and WvWvW?
Thanks

Eles are a little overwhelming at first, but it should not take to long to get used to it.
Mesmers in WvWvW are neck in neck with thief for the title “Most OP class.”

If you’re just starting, do not play an Ele. It is perhaps one of the worst things a new player can do.

Even someone experienced in the game can have issues with eles, and you don’t need to struggle with both your class AND figuring out the game.

I would definitely recommend playing a warrior or ranger, at least until you become accustomed to the game somewhat.

80 Guardian. 80 Warrior. 80 Thief. 80 Engineer. 80 Necromancer. 80 Ranger.

Ok, each their own opinion, but i will share what i have learned.
GW2 is a “different” MMO. You need to learn how this game is played and that is not always as easy as it seems. The active fightstyle, dodging, a different agro system then in most other MMO’s, the Dynamic Events, getting exp for things like exploring, crafting, checking out Vista’s,…… this was for me a total new approach to MMO.

And it took me some time to get used to it all. I’m playing the game now over 3 months and still learn things almost every day. Haven’t set a foot in a dungeon yet, only briefly touched WvW and sPVP is something i’m still scared off

So you will need some time to adjust to all those things. There are no restrictions to any race, meaning, all races can play all professions. But not all professions are as easy to learn. In my experience, a Ranger, Warrior or Guardian are the most easy to learn. Ranger has his, well, range offcourse and a pet to tank.
Warrior is a fighting tank, with a nice pool off health and brutal force to overcome the enemy.
Guardians are a strong support class that can stand in a fight and come out victorious.

The elems, yes, they are great to play, they are wonderfull strong in the hands of a good player and you will have tons off fun with them. But if you feel that it’s not going well, try out another class like i suggested. Just to get the basics about the game. You can read guides, posts and manuals, you can watch hundreds of youtube movies, but you will only learn to play the game by getting ingame and PLAY it

So if you really want to play an Ele, go ahead, but don’t dismiss them when its not going well. Just try another profession to learn the game and then return to your Ele!

Welcome to the game, there’s a lot of fun things to do!

In terms of playing a ‘mage’, as people have pointed out there are 3 “Scholar” classes: Elementalist, Necromancer and Mesmer. Each has a different play style and different tactics, some of which are easy to master and some of which will take some time to get into.

You get 5 character slots with the game, so I would recomend rolling one of each and exploring a bit, play around with them and see what you like.

sPvP will automatically level you to 80, give you access to max gear and all skills and traits, so you can play with a variety of things and figure out what you like. WvW uses what you acomplish in PvE, so you will have to unlock skills as you go, get armor and weapons etc to use them in WvW.

In terms of the elemantalist’s elemental attunements being overwhelming, one thing to know about the ele is that you can only equip one weapon set at a time, so while the elementalist is swapping attunements, Mesmers and Necromancers are swapping weapon sets… the ele still has twice as many skills, and it can feel like quite a bit to juggle, but after a few levels of playing through PvE, you’ll get the hang of it.

Whatever you do, welcome to the game and happy p0wning!

Just don’t get a Razer Naga, you’ll end up what I did and bind everything to the thumb pad and never press the function keys or 4-0. Well, for my ele I did anyhow.
