New in GW2.
Helpful? any of the classes can be helpful for whatever situation. There’s no set-in-stone roll. Not sure what you mean by funny though. I guess Asura make the funniest race?
Welcome to GW2 as well! ^^
Asuran necro at minimal size? minions from asuran small sized are taller than the asura…
If you want the best personal story, choose a Blood Legion Charr.
William S. Burroughs
Necro is not helpful, they are a selfish class. Maybe an asura guardian? A mini mini asura wielding a hammer can be funny.
This is an extremely hard question to answer, and you’re going to get a lot of answers.
But scrap all the “play this profession” stuff. I’m sure i spent more than the first week of my GW2 career rolling alts. playing everything until i found something i actually liked. The professions are all different. WAY Different. Each of them has a unique feel and bring something completely unique to a group. The best advice anyone can give you is to find the profession you like the most. Every single profession will provide something “helpful” to the party in a different capacity.
Make alts. Get a feel for the professions. You’ll make a better decision that way than the advice than any of us.
Edit: Welcome to GW2 !

To add on to what Seven said:
You don’t have to even play with a char/class for too long to get a feel if you like it or not. What you can do is go to the PvP area and you will be auto levelled up to 80 and will get to play with all the weaponskills, utilites but I am not sure about the traits these days however. Spend an hour or so on each class here (fighting the dummies not other players unless you feel that way inclined :P) and you will get an idea which feels right for you. You can then just choose whatever race you fancy for the story or roleplay.
Just make a Warrior. There are many portions of the game where players will not accept you unless you are a Warrior.
If you want a popular character to team with, then you will most likely want to roll a heavy. A heavy is either a guardian or warrior.
Necromancers, I would say are good first characters to start with if you like casters.

Man those days are over. That’s like living in the past. The only people today who won’t except you if you’re not a warrior are people who can’t adjust to a new meta.

I still come across dungeons parties where people will only accept zerker warriors.
You have 5 character slots to start with. Make a range of professions and play one a day. Go to the PvP area to get an idea of the full set of skills they will have. Any you really don’t like, delete and make one of the 3 remaining professions to try. If you like the game it will be long term so it’s not necessary to rush your decision.

I come across people still asking for a tank and a healer, but their information is at the very least outdated. Numbers run by someone in the Reddit community doesn’t put the warrior at near the highest damage output anymore.

Making a Warrior is still guaranteed to get you into parties. I am not saying it is right, but if you are the sort who only wants to make one profession, you should make a warrior.

Make your own parties then.
