I currently run on an iMac that doesn’t meet the system requirements. Recently I have needed to get a new Macbook Air for school. I checked through and see that this meets the system requirements.

I spent a week redownloading the game (feature patch and broadband limit got in the way) and the first time I opened the game up, I heard a loud whirring noise. After researching this, I found that it was the fan, and after installing an app to check the temperature of the computer I found that it heats up to 90-100 degrees celsius. I really would like to move to my new laptop, but how can I reduce the temperature of the actual computer.

Specs:
Processor 1.3 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics Intel HD Graphics 5000 1024 MB
Software OS X 10.9.2 (13C1021)

You have two options:

1. Buy a laptop cooler pad/use it in a colder location.
2. Get overclocking applications and use them to UNDERclock whichever component isn’t bottlenecking your performance. I can’t advise because you’re on a Mac so all my OC experience is irrelevant to your case.

What I’ve done on my laptop is to put a fan next to it. (But not too close so it could mess up the internal fan.)

If you want to play games on laptops then you will have to buy a cooling pad.
If you don’t then it’s just a matter of time before you play too long and burn your laptop.

Unfortunately meeting the specs on paper and running the game comfortably are two different things.

Run it in Windows via Boot Camp on the lowest settings you can stomach. And those laptop cooler pads already suggested will help a little in the long term.

External fan blowing on it and using styrofoam pads at the corners to lift it up an inch or two so air circulates better, that’s what I do with my laptop.

Turn on the frame limiter in graphics options, set it to the lowest setting.

I had an enourmous buildup of heath with my new gaming laptop some months ago. It was caused by the wooden table which it stood on. the wood kept absorbing the heat underneed. a glass table was also not doing the trick. An old metal pc casing under the laptop did the trick. Its much cooler now when being pushed to the limit. You also have metalic standards for you laptop which have the same effect.

I will look out for a cooling pad and try out an external fan. I should already have a the frame limiter on 30fps. Will change it if not done already. Thanks for the help

Also check the computer out for dust on the fan. Dust build up will cause the fan to run slower and not be as effective. And the loud sound you heard from the fan is not a good sign. If could be possible you need to replace the fan. If its new, it should still be under warranty. Just take it into your local repair center and have them look at it.

Also do you run it on a desk or on your lap/cover etc? I use to run my laptop on my lap all the time and found it got way too hot. Had never thought that it was because it attracted more dust and fibres from my trousers untill my computer tech told me off

At least once half a year i use a compressed air can to clean the dust from my notebook fan.

(tip: make sure the air stream from the can is transparent before u use it on your notebook)

I play it on 2 years older MacBook Air. I don’t think you will need to reduce the temperature in any other way than letting the fan run. If it were to get damaged, the computer would shut itself down. Don’t worry, MBAs get quite often near this temperature, the noise is just the fan running at 6,5k rpm.
