I suppose the topic says it all. I just got the game a week ago and i’ve been struggling to find the right profession for me. (I apologize for another one of these posts). It’s just hard for me to decide which profession to choose and put so many hours into when I don’t really know what the higher level pve and pvp will feel like, especially dungeons.

Coming from Wow, I thought I would love the warrior but I found the combat system to be stiff and undesirable to me. That prompted me to make an elementalist, which I got to 14 and have so far mostly enjoyed. I say mostly because the rotations have just started to die off in my mind. I find most of the abilities to be slightly useless, at least at this level. I’m either in fire doing damage or in water trying not to die.

I guess what I am looking for is to make sure I pick the absolute best profession for me now before I get too far ahead and don’t have the motivation to reroll. I really want to start seeing the real game at higher levels.

I’ve been looking into a few professions that interest me. Mainly ele, necro, mesmer and thief. I was hesitant to start a thief but I did last night because my main was a rogue on Wow. I was afraid of the melee system because of my experience on the warrior, but it wasn’t bad. I just don’t know how end game would feel.

So, what professions are good? What ones stand out as desirable in groups for dungeons and why? What ones stand out as being on top in pvp? Which ones have the highest dps, if that is something calculated in GW2?

I guess my play style may be an issue. I like to always be active while playing, or it feels like I am not doing everything that I possibly could be. With the warrior, at least at low levels, I found myself standing still pushing one or two buttons every 10 seconds. With the ele I could switch between 20 abilities and keep myself active, but that quickly turned into 3 or 4 abilities only.

Anyways, thanks for any help and suggestions that you guys have. It is really appreciated!

well- let’s see.
If you want to see what a profession would be like at max level, take it into the mists where you will be 80 with all your skills and traits unlocked.
You can play around with various builds to see what works for you.
Just swapping the weapon set makes a huge difference in how classes play.

Keep in mind that you will mostly not be using a standard rotation, since the combat in GW2 is more situational and you have the freedom to switch mid-fight to whatever is working best in any given scenario.

Most classes fit most play styles however -if you like being active a thief, elementalist and a mesmer may work out for you.
With an elementalist it is all about swapping attunements to get the most out of a fight- it takes getting used to and is very different from your classic caster archetype.
A thief is very quick and sneaky and positioning is everything.
A mesmer works by denial and control. It is awesome for keeping enemies away from yourself but be aware that you will need to “play piano” and switch weapons constantly.

My suggestion would be just to make 5 characters take them into the mists and see how they work out for you.
Hope this helps

I should firstly warn that the combat system is much different here than it is from WoW. There are no dedicated tanks or healers, so focusing on pure DPS will get you killed in PvE and is very situational in WvW.

DPS-wise, elementalist has the best AoEs (though damage will be low if you spec bunker) and thief has the highest single-target damage.

Also, every class is good in dungeons/WvW/etc if played right- I’d rather take a skilled engineer over a guardian who thinks he can facetank and gets himself killed periodically. A good rule of thumb is this- do you enjoy the class? Then play it, and ignore what other people say.

I main an elementalist and I will say that yeah, the class is squishy at first but evolves as you level. What weapon set are you using? I could probably give some advice regarding skill use- remember that you will need to use skills to control the movement of your enemy. Are you moving around as you fight?

The Mists seems like a good idea. I will definitely try that after my classes today! I just experimented with it on my Ele. It’s definitely a new way to interpret pvp, so it will take time for me to learn to not just mash buttons. Narrowed it to Ele Mesmer and thief so I’ll have to try those three at it.

Falunel, I started off scepter/dagger on my Ele. I heard its good end game, and I liked this one combo I saw in a video. Those both however, require me to wait for many levels. So I switched to staff for the time being.
