Hello
I’ve been playing World of Warcraft for almost 7 years now and it’s time to say no and start playing something new, so Guild Wars 2 is my choice. What I want to ask is, how look the ranking of classes wanted/usable/best in PvE. In World of Warcraft I was mainly running Challenge Modes and Raids. I’ve heard that here CM exists too, if its true please tell me which classes are most wanted in those type of content? Oh and to clarify, I want to be damage dealer, not some kind of support or tank or healer(dunno how it looks here in gw2 :P). BUT if there is some kind of support that can and even HAVE TO deal damage it would be nice too

Hi Kuba,

First, keep in mind that this isn’t a trinity game. Every class needs to do damage in PvE, has an own heal, and can often support with fields/boons.

I’m personally not that big on PvE (fractals/dungeons) but Warriors, staff Ele’s and guards are all top picks for the more hardcore PvE meta as I understand it. Mesmer is also useful for some specific applications.

Engie and Thief have their uses, While Necro and Ranger tend to be less than optimal for the real competitive PvE. Ranger because of dodgy Pet AI, Necro because other classes simply do PvE better.

This is not to say any of those are useless; any class can run just about anything. They’re often just suboptimal. However, there’s plenty of people that don’t mind. Content doesn’t become harder, just slower, imo.

Hope that helps. Maybe someone more versed in fractals/dungeons can offer their insights.

Firstly there’s no tank/healer/DPS trinity in this game. We have a soft trinity of Control/Damage/Support which all classes can be spec’d into to varying degrees.

With regards to your wanting a Damage/Support class then I’d recommend either Guardian or Elementalist.

Guardians provide good damage and support like Aegis (blocks the next attack), blinds, reflects, group wide condition cleansing and group wide stability.

Ele’s are excellent damage dealers and can provide more offensive buffs like might, and fury as well as supportive things like healing and condition cleansing.

Mechanic’s wise Engi’s and Ele’s are kind of similar. They both have no weapon swap but instead swap between different kits (Engi) or attunements (Ele) providing you with different skills and effects.

Best place to look for guides would the specific class sub forums.

If you want a better idea of what they do take them into PvP (there’s a gate in your racial city that takes you to Lion’s Arch and gate in the southern keep that lets you enter PvP) and play around with builds etc.

Otherwise I’d say level each class to around 30 before making a firm choice. You’ll have more unlocked by then and will have had a chance to play around with the different weapon sets.

You are in luck Kubas. Engineer and Elementalist are the only two profession that are optimized in range weapon for PvE. All other profession should be melee only, or melee for most of the time. But still, it doesn’t mean that because you are range, you should stay at max distance. This game is all about cooperation and you need to stay relatively near the rest of your group to share boons and support each other.

Engineer most efficient weapon is grenade kit, while for Elementalist, its will be staff. Elementalist have other option, but these other option are not range.

For Engineers one of the better resources out there is http://www.wolfineer.com/

There may be a similar site for Eles, but I’ve only started dipping my toes into that prof.
