New player - should I play engineer?
The engineer is an oddball and challenging
It was the first toon I brought to 80 and I still love it a lot
They have a huge amount off potential and can be very very good.
They are also very versatile, almost all kits require a different mindset and way off playing (including armor and traits).
But a good engineer can use that to its advantage and really be that versatile.
It is challenging but really doable. so the main question is. Do you like a challenge? If you success you can be really good! If you want to play it safe, there are other easier classes to master.

Roll one and play it. If you have fun then you have answered your question. No one here can tell you what is fun for you. There really isn’t a risk in trying it out unless you are maxed on character slots and need to buy another to try it out.
Everyone seems pretty divided on whether or not engineer is fun, I just started recently and was looking for opinions.
It;s a very fun and powerful class if played right!
Here is one video to check out, see if Engineer is your style:

Engineer is one of my 80’s, and was intended to be my main. I think it has the potential to be very fun, though it wasn’t really compelling for me until I had access to better traits and skills (I wanna say it was in the 30s that it became a great class for me). I think you should try it out, but if you don’t love it right away, consider giving it another chance at a later date.

Because we can’t be angry about both?
Engineer was my first 80, and I guess I would consider him my main, though I do a lot of alt hopping. They are very versatile and a fun profession imo, but the style of play isn’t for everyone. I’d suggest trying it yourself, as that is the only way to know. In fact, it took me a good 40 or 50 levels before I started to get the hang of it. You can focus on different setups on an engineer quite easily, so make sure you play around with each kit, etc. as you may find yourself favoring some and not others and eventually you will settle into your style of play after testing the waters.
You should make a turret engineer, those things are wicked sick.
The Warrior turns to the guardian and says, “Did you hear something?”
Guardian replies, “No, but how’d the elementalist die?”
Actually, I think you’d be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn’t think Engis are fun. The big debate is whether they’re viable/wanted/OP/etc in a particular aspect of the game. I generally ignore all the warrior/guardian/Mesmer speed-run elitists out there that preach specific meta builds. When it comes down to it, if it’s fun for you stick with it.
That being said, right now condition Engi is incredibly strong in PvP/WvW. It’s got plenty of viability and utility in dungeons and zergs. And best of all, it’s got so much variety that you’re sure to stay interested in it long after you’d get bored with say guardian. GL
