Q:
New player - tips for the game?
A:
Just for the future – questions like this are probably going to be better answered in the “players helping players” forum.
To answer your questions:
- Race does not affect your abilities much at all in GW2. Just pick what you like best. For class Elementalist is probably the best for AOE damage and Warrior is the best melee character to start out with.
- There are no PvP or PvE servers in GW2. The two are completely separated in game, and you won’t be ganked unless you are choosing to PvP. PvE in guild wars in about cooperation not competition.
The wiki is very helpful for getting the basics of the game (see link in top left corner).
Yes, after reading completly th class/profession I think Sylvari/Ele is the most appropriated for my game play. not sure if I understood how PVE/PVP will work on this game. So you mean there are no specific servers around here? is all in jst one plataform?
There are servers, split into two region NA and EU. Within each region certain servers are unoffically designated towards certain styles of play or location of player. For example – roleplayers tend to head for Tarnished Coast (NA) or Piken Square (EU). Some EU servers are designated for specific language speakers (french, german, spanish) but if that’s not your first language you can still join that server.
Perhaps if you outline what you want from your server community (type of play, timezone of players, language, etc) people can give you suggestions for which to pick?
Here’s a list of the server names. http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Servers
Also you can guest between servers in your region (NA or EU) for free, but cannot guest between regions (NA-EU).

Every class has a melee and a ranged option (though for engineer the melee option is hidden in the utility skills).
Every class has at least one good AoE weapon.
Picking a race is all about flavor. I strongly recommend using up all your initial character slots to try out each race to about level 10, and then use that to narrow things down and re-roll on the races and classes you like.

There are different servers but there are no PvP or PvE servers.
All servers have both, but they’re in clearly separated areas. It’s impossible to attack other players, or be attacked by them, without going into a PvP match, which you don’t need to do unless you want to play PvP. So you’ll never be griefed or ganked or whatever while playing PvE.
But you can also go and play PvP, either team matches or World vs World which is on a much bigger scale, right from level 2* because you’ll be upscalled automatically.
(* And the only reason you can’t do it from level 1 is that you automatically get levelled up at the end of the intro instance.)
