New to game - how to level and ranger issue
The truth is you should take what people say about the classes on the forums with a grain of salt, as most is gross exaggeration. Could rangers use a few tweaks? Sure, and so could a lot of the classes. The real question is do you find it fun and does it fit your playstyle. If so, stick with it.
As for leveling, you can hop around the different racial zones (not just the cities) if you start out leveling hearts. I typically do this anyway to get a bunch of skill points at the start of a new character. Gather mats, even if you aren’t a crafter, they award xp and can make you some cash along the way. Do every event and chains you come across, as these are a big bulk of xp. Crafting also gives you a good chunk and finally there is WvW. If it’s active, it can be quite fast for xp gain as well.
I’m only level 30 on my ranger, so I can’t speak about the endgame, but so far I haven’t had any trouble at all with being a ranger. In fact, I find that I’m dying significantly less than on my other characters. Did you go to the other racial cities and then also level 1-15 or so areas outside those cities? Caledon Forest (Sylvari), Wayfarer Foothills (Norn), Queensdale (Human), etc.?
Also, Dynamic Events (the orange circles and such on your map) are great ways to earn experience. For the most part, when I see a DE start, I drop everything and go do it – unless I really don’t like that particular DE. If you haven’t been keeping up on your personal storyline quests, that’s a great way to level as well.
Crafting can be a bit of a money sink, but it’s a fast way to level, as well.
What level are you?

I am also a level 30 Ranger, but I have played over in sPVP and a touch of WvW.
In it’s current state, the Ranger has some bugs and fairly useless traits/skills (spirits and shouts are pretty bad, except for situational things). However, there are definitely competitive builds out there for PvP and Dungeons and such. More than sucking outright, the Ranger is just a little low on build variety until the bugs are fixed.
Also, for general PVE the Ranger is considered quite strong I believe.
I have a level 80 ranger and have enjoyed it since I got my first bow. I didn’t have any issues with leveling, but expect to die alot as they are not very stout. My only real complaints about the profession is that I see “obstructed” all to often, and the longbow is slow.
As Aeleniel mentioned, explore the other level 1-15 areas and do the hearts and aim to complete 100% of each of the areas. Just finding Waypoints and POI’s grant XP.
Hello! I moved around the different cities and completed all the hearts (except Asura, I can’t find the portal to the quest area). So now I’m not sure what to do.
I’m a level 12 ranger. Quite interested in crafting. Maybe I’ll look at that – but how do I go about doing it. I looked at the crafting section but there’s no guide.
The beauty of this game is that everything you do gives you XP so if you want to level quickly the best way is to do everything you come across rather than focusing on one thing.
So use your personal story and/or heart quests and other map markers as a general guide for where to go but as you’re going along collect any crafting materals you come across, do skill point challenges, definately do dynamic events, try some crafting, even just killing random enemies as you pass them.
If you’ve really done every heart in every 1-15 area and you’re only level 12 all I can think of is that you must have been skipping pretty much everything else, and that’s just going to slow down your levelling.

Are you doing your personal storyline? That will give you good xp and gear etc.
As to Crafting, use the little eye button on the bottom left of the map to select only crafting, and when in a city (like Divinity’s Reach), you’ll be able to see where all the crafting tutors are. Go to one of them, and then start that craft. You can have two Crafts going on at once.
Good luck.
Cheers.

On the subject of rangers: There will always be people attacking a class and there will always be people defending a class.
I’ve made my opinion on rangers known in this forum quite a bit, so I won’t reiterate it. Suffice to say, it will take a LOT to make me ever log back onto him.
With that said, play what you like.
Thank you guys. I started to really pay attention to hearts, DE, map locations. Turns out I missed the Asura one, and got to 17. Then I started exploring the area around Sylvari and got to 21! (: Exploring is a little scary though. I don’t know why.
