I like interesting classes, not like only hack and slash like d3 barbarian, i also like summoning pets or other helpers like old d2 necro i guess.

With that information what would you suggest I make? Does it matter what race or is it whatever and just pick a profession?

thanks!

It sounds like you’d really enjoy Mesmer or Necro. Necro is probably the easier to introduce yourself to the game with, but both have some pretty advanced skillset opportunity.

I’ve personally only gotten both to 40 so far, so I’ll yield to experts on the specifics, but as I said, I think they suit what it sounds like you like to play.

Welcome to GW2!

Having said that the best classes in GW2 are ones without summons/pets, the classes that have them Ranger, Necro & Engineer are considered the weakest 3 classes by most for various reasons.

I played D3 as well and nothing in GW2 plays like a WD in D3 or Necromancer in D2.

Mesmer does however have illusions (up to 3) which are good and Mesmer is one of the more powerful classes to play, they also have alot of unique or nearly unique abilities. Perhaps might suit you?

Your race of choice is up to you, it will have very little impact on how your character plays. There are a few racial skills that come in handy while leveling, but at max level, they tend to not scale as well as the skills from your profession.

In terms of summoning hordes of minions, I would recomend Mesmer > Necromancer, but I would agree that those two professions are the place to go.

Necromancer minions underwhelm a bit as they’re not a core mechanic of the profession, but an available build option in the profession. If your mesmer isn’t producing wave after wave of clones and phantasms…. you’re afk.

I went to Guardian, looking at the things a guardian could summon in an attempt to get this sort of game play and was sadly disappointed (but I love my guardian for what she does, and still play her a ton.)

Also, Engineer with Turrets is viable for this type of play, and my fiancee played a turret engineer for a long time before getting more into engineer kits.

Welcome to the game, hope you enjoy it!

Oh its a great game overall, I would give GW2, 9.5/10.

D3 on the other hand just 7/10, its not bad, its just not great.

GW2 is great for diversity. I hated how D3 was made because you play it through once on Normal and you never really see anything new (vs. D2 where the maps were dynamically generated, if with predictability sometimes).

GW2 is basically the extreme opposite end of the spectrum. There’s lots to do, and for the most part, those activities are fleshed out quite well (some bugs, but they’re being worked on).

The best advice I can give is try everything. You’re bound to find something you enjoy doing – there really is that much going on.

I would say the necro or the mesmer is the way to go for you.. Don’t listen to the guy who said they are weak class because there are no professions that are weak they all bring potential to he game.

Race has little to no effect on your gameplay, racial skills are purposefully downgraded to be weaker than any normal skill you could substitute it for to prevent one race from being th “op race” everyone plays. You would most likely enjoy necro, but I won’t sugarcoat it, necro can be very powerful, but the learning curve for it is very steep. It’s not an easy class to play at all if you wanna tackle the most difficult content. That being said, it is my favorite and always will be. The rewards from it far surpass other classes I have played in terms of enjoyment. I already have a lvl 80 necro and working on a new one now too for a completely different build. to answer your question about your storyline, it sounds like you chose the human one, it doesn’t affect anything but what path you take in your personal story. In the end, we all arrive at the same parts of the story anyway. If you want to spoil the plot and know what happens, the wiki usually has storyline walkthroughs you can read up on.

I’m going to agree with those above me, saying the Mesmer or Necro might be good fits for you.

Also, I want to add that GW2 isn’t like most MMORPGs. Racing to 80 so you can get to end-game content & the gear grind is not what this game is about. It’s about the storyline, new builds, exploring. Dungeons and PvP and WvW are accessible very early in the game, allowing you to enjoy most of what GW2 has to offer while you level instead of after you’ve hit 80. This means that if you take your time, enjoy your character, maybe an alt or 2, explore a bit, try some PvP, and are still level 53, you haven’t lost anything. You’re maximizing your experience.
