New to the game
My first question would be, what type of content do you enjoy? Do you prefer WvW, Team based PvP, PvE, or a combination of all? There are a lot of different things that you can do in the game to level and have fun.
If you can give us an idea of what type of content you want to enjoy, we can give you ideas based on what you will prefer.
1. Join a good guild. You dont need to do it right away but this will help you more than anything.
2. Many ways to go as far as leveling but just completing heart quests and zones is in my opinion the best way to level as that will open up heart/karma vendors to you and get you waypoints you can use later to move from area to area.
3. Work your way through zones that are level appropriate. Each zone on the map has a level range associated with it. I generally do my starter area first, then go to Lion’s Arch via the Asura gate in your home city and from there go to another races home city and do their starting zones. Rinse repeat. You will meet folks along the way. Talk to them in local. You will eventually find a person or a group you enjoy running with and probably join their guild.
4. Warrior is a solid choice for your first character. Can do about anything with them.
5. If you need a break from zoning, try world versus world or player versus player. Youll get smashed over and over to begin with but you will get your feet wet. You may even get good at it. Dont fear doing it. All you can do is die a virtual death. There are no fair maidens there to be embarrassed in front of
6. Welcome to GW2. It is a game that is what you make of it. It has strengths and weaknesses but I do dearly love it.
Thanks for the replies.
Generally I enjoy PvE mostly. In the games that I mentioned previously (Path of Exile and Marvel Heroes) I really like the loot grind, farming for rare/unique items and leveling my character. I like PvP if it is done well and balanced. I have done some group content with friends and guild members in both and enjoy the comradery it brings.
Then as ABrooke suggested, I would start by working on map completion (hearts, vistas, etc.). As I have 4 toons with full map completion, one of the things that I did to break it up, was try to find the jumping puzzles in each zone (if you like those, I loved them) and see if you can solve it on your own.
There isn’t much of a loot grind in this game, unless you want to work towards full ascended and a Legendary. It was intended when the game launched that as soon as you hit 80 you could easily have the best in slot gear. With the introduction of Ascended gear, it can take you a couple of months to complete the set, but that is mostly due to time gating. If you have the money, you can speed up the process significantly.
I hope this helps.
Thanks for the help guys. The Ascended gear sounds like something I would like to work towards. I don’t mind the time involvement as I don’t ever buy xp boosters or anything other than cosmetic items in games that offer those kinds of things.
I just checked my original character that I haven’t played in 2 years and it’s a level 19 Sylvari Ranger with a bank and inventory full of items. I have no clue what the items are worth or if I should sell or keep them.
Also I remember now why I had stopped playing. I think I had gone to Lions Arch during some sort of Winter event and couldn’t figure out how to get back to the starting area. I still can’t lol.
Now I am considering just starting back up with my ranger since he is already level 19 and has all kinds of items and gift boxes in his inventory.
I know I can open the map and travel to various waypoints that I have unlocked within the same location but I also would like to know if there is a simple way to portal out of an entire map (Lions arch for example) back to the starting area? I remember always getting lost running through the large Gates.
Yeah there are portals, they moved them from where they were at launch though, they’re closer to the north side of lion’s arch now
I’d like to thank randomguy for all of his help. He found me in game and answered a lot of my questions as well as giving me some tips. It’s very much appreciated.
