Hey guys, So I used to play Guild Wars 1 many years ago.

A week ago I decided to try Guild Wars 2, I like it so I bought it. Anyways, I’ve leveled a character to 18, decided to use my boost on a Necromancer. I went around the one area ( Forget the name ) killing stuff, Finding treasure chests with the shovel and opening them with bandit keys which is fun.

I just feel.. Kinda lost. Should I just level another character from scratch?

Thanks.

Welcome. Silverwastes ‘occurs/exists’ in season 2 of the Living World story arc. So far for story, we have the personal story from the original game, LW seasons 1 and 2, Heart of Thorns story and we are currently in the second to last episode of LW season 3. If being lost means you don’t know the story, then I would do your personal story. Unfortunately LW season 1 isn’t available but LW season 2 and past episodes of LW season 3 can be purchased from the gem shop. Whether to lvl a new character is up to you. Your max lvl character will be scaled to the content you are doing so you won’t ever feel too overpowered.

Also the game will automatically down level you in lower level maps but you will still earn “similar” XP to your actual level as well as random loot drops will be your actual level. So just because you’re 80 doesn’t mean the core Tyria maps are worthless to play in.

But if you are going to stick with the level 80, start the HoT story so you can activate a core Tyria mastery track so that XP goes somewhere. Masteries need both points and XP earned from either the base game for Core Tyria Masteries or the expansion and LWS3 for HoT Masteries.

Forget all that rubbish. Just press ‘B’ select … eh… Select Eternal Battlegrounds for now.
Watch you’re backside and follow your friends. Good luck out there.

Nobody at Anet loves WvW like Grouch loved PvP. That’s what we need, a WvW Grouch, but taller.

Open your hero window and select the story tab. Make sure your personal story is active. I would highly recommend completing your personal story which will lead you through the core game world first. Then watch the living story season 1 (season 1 can no longer be played) then if you are enjoying the living story purchase season 2 and finish that. Your next step would be heart of thorns story and finish with season 3.

Pvp/wvw is always nice to mix in. Welcome to gw2

I would strongly suggest leveling a character from 1 to 80 naturally. You will learn more of the mechanics of your Profession and the game, and won’t miss out of the level-up tutorial tips and rewards.

You can always go back to your boosted character later; you will eventually, probably, want a character of each Profession, anyway.

Welcome to Tyria, and good luck.

My advice for a new player.
Choose thief. One of the two skill balance developers mains thief and it’s been top dog for five years and never gets nerfed. It’s amazing now and in the expansion (according to leaks) gets 1-shot kills while being invisible and maximum range. FACT.

Don’t touch necromancer. It’s garbage, can’t do anything and has infinite cooldowns on everything and no movement abilities. ALSO A FACT.

Please realise these are slight exaggerations but they are also… pretty much true.

Season 1 can not be played, however there is a in game cinematic that will explain some of it. However if you really want to experience Season 1 (which has the back story of a lot of recurring characters in it), I would recommend looking for a game movie on youtube for it. I watched one and it explained so much stuff that I had missed….

just search for gw2 season 1 game movie and you should find a few…

except not really. Necro is one of the most played classes in the game, and Thief is only now getting a build that might get accepted in raids. So it really depends on your playstyle and what content in game you want to play. ALWAYS ask what game type people are talking about, because most of the posts you will see are talking about pvp, and that might as well be a totally different game from anything else.

The general advice experienced players give to new players is to level to 80 the normal way your first go at it. The fear is that new players will find HoT a bit overwhelming and get the wrong impression.

However, you’ve already consumed the boost (right?). If it were me, I’d head to the Verdant Brink map via the portal in the southwest corner of the Silver Wastes (Note: You may need to progress the HoT storyline through the silver wastes to get there).

Fair warning: The HoT maps are designed for experienced players. The monsters are more dangerous and more numerous. The maps are also huge and layered and you begin with only basic gliding – one of many masteries you will need to unlock in order to progress through the jungle.

Worst case scenario: The monsters kill you every way you turn and you can’t find your way anywhere in the jungle. At least you gave it a try, right? Maybe playing through from 1-80 isn’t such a bad way to go after all.

Or maybe you’re old hat at this sort of thing and this is no big deal for you, even as a new player. You may find HoT a lot of fun right from the start. And you can still take your level 80 back and play through the personal storyline so you know what’s going on.

You are not alone. Many people starting GW2 now have the same “lost” feeling/complaint.

First, I recommend you play through a character and level it from 1-80 without boosts. (You’ll see this recommendation a lot around here.) It will help you learn the game, your character, a good playstyle fit, and playing through personal story will give you some help with gear and materials from leveling rewards.

Second, you’ll see a lot of LS abbreviations followed by the season number— for living story. Living story is GW2’s way of keeping the game world progressing and changing.

  • LS1 is not replayable at this time, but if you want to watch a good recap: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=joLmVI5URak .
  • LS2 & LS3 were free if you logged in at any time during its release; if not, you can buy them in the gemshop. (We are currently anticipating the final release ep. of LS3.)
  • HoT story falls between LS2 & LS3 and is free to all who buy the HoT expansion.
Most people recommend getting the living story packages as they are full of useful mastery points and rewards. LS3 also grants access to several new maps. However, there is plenty of stuff to do for a new player without all the extras.

What may contribute to feeling lost is that GW2 doesn’t have strictly linear quest lines and nothing to specifically tell you what or where you should be at any given time. Many new players can struggle with the idea of setting their own goals to play the game. So, here is a list of helpful new player topic links from reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/wiki/newplayers

Finally, play what you like. Explore the game world in all its modes. You can freely test a newly created character by taking it into the PvP lobby (crossed swords icon on the upper left screen) and testing builds on golems to determine whether you’ll enjoy playing something. If/when you become concerned about the ultimate meta-build for you class, you can visit the class forums or sites like metabattle, but absolutely don’t rush it and don’t worry about it until you’re max level.
