The only good tip I can give you is to test it out yourself
Everyone’s playing everything. Play until you can say the same

Thief is pretty interesting because it uses a energy instead of cooldowns for his weapon skills, he is squishy and you have to utilize blind fields and dodges to stay in battle but this is actually a pretty good way of learning certain mechanics.

Oh and if you level up, try to switch weapon sets once in a while, just to see how different weapons feel.

Each and every human being is different, that said each and every human being finds different things to be fun.

I don’t know you so well, that I could tell you what you will find most fun to play, but there is no single best class in the game. Each class has it’s own strengths and weaknesses. Some are better than others in different parts of the game (PvE, PvP, WvW, Dungeons, Bosses, solo play, group play etc…), but each and every class can pull their own weight in all aspects.

Some classes are very easy to play compared to other classes (warrior vs mesmer), but that don’t mean they are weaker or better. It all depends on your own play style.
Just about all classes can be played in range or in melee or switching between them.

Thief is about fast DPS and he’s good at it, but he’s not that good when being swamped by half a dozen mobs. He has skills to get out of situation like that, but ie a warrior in similar situation would just go haywire and kill the mobs. But the warrior has almost no skills to get out of bad situations, other than pummeling them to mushy pulp. A ranger could leave his/her/it’s trusted pet to fight and run away and lay traps to slow pursuing mobs.
Each class has it’s own way to resolve situations.

My advice is keep the thief for now, but use another character slot and try different classes to at least level 15, with different weapon sets. Yes it takes time, but that is the only way for you to know what class you find most fun to play.

@Alerno What you are saying about Thieves being solely fast DPS, doing worse against many mobs, and Warriors not having reliable escape routes is not correct. Both can do the exact opposite just as well. Poke me online for a demonstration, if you like.

@OP There’s lots of good advice in this thread already. To add a bit to that, don’t shun having multiple characters, even if only one is your main. After you have a set up main, you can only benefit from expanding and growing your “army”. There’s a very short timespan of gear-chasing in GW2; it’s more important to view your skills and abilities in light of what is possible and what everyone else can do.

I’d suggest the following, but I imagine plenty of people are going to disagree.

Guardian/Warrior – easy classes with plenty of utility, you’re in demand end game.

Human – Easiest starting location with plenty of activity so you’ll always have people on hand to help.

^ This is the best combination for someone just starting the game.

Now don’t get me wrong, if you want something more challenging go ahead with all the other classes/races each has its place, but as a starting point I don’t think you can go wrong with my recommendation above.

Delgan Cortex – Mesmer Lv80
Guild: N/A
Seafarer’s Rest – EU
