New to the game(used free booster)
The whole reason i bought this game was for the level 80 free booster. I really dont want to have to go through the leveling process, at least not at this time. So again what is there for me to do in end game content. Im a pvp player but my gear isnt the greatest, so is there a gear grind i can go do, or what type of pve content is there to do. I understand that pvp is different in this game and that everyone is equalized out but there has to be some gear you can get to help augment your toon. Just curious.
Theres 2 types of pvp. There’s spvp and there’s wvw.
Spvp, the gear is provided to you. No pve gear is used, but you’ll at least need to be wielding weapons and wearing armor of some level. You can be level 2 and using level 2 gear in spvp and you’ll be at the same level as a level 80. Use the crossed swords on your UI panel at top right to go to the pvp lobby. Then use the panel at center of your
UI to pick out your trinkets. You’ll need also to select your traits. You should be good to go then and play spvp
WvW uses pve gear. They sell gear there but the exotics you have are probably better.
The other places to get different exotic gear are dungeons (buy with dungeon tokens), from the trading post (gold) or with karma (which you don’t have)
Ascended gear needs laurels to craft and mats (which you don’t have) or drops, which takes playing time (usually in fractals, type of dungeon).

So do the dungeons have different level scaling or can i do just any of them?

At level 80 you can go into any dungeon but you’ll need to reach the maps first, which is a run to them.
Ranger is a really safe class to start with! <- thats a good thing
First I would unlock gliding!
I would suggest to play threw the player story and beat zhaitan. Then play threw the HoT story and get caught up to the current living story. While doing that get as many way points as you can and do the daily’s every day. (pvp daily’s are some what easy.) Exotic gear is good for a vary long time so do not feel rushed to get ascended. keep almost all mid to lower tier leather, ore, cloth, and wood. (you will need allot for crafting ascended) But only craft ascended when you know you will be playing that class allot. I would also stress keeping all ectos, high tier mats, and mystic coin’s. Because you need them if you ever plan to craft a legendary.
yea I just noticed the run to the dungeon thing, which im fine with. So i get this straight the dungeons have a chance to drop tokens which i use to buy gear that I could use(for better statages and what not)?
I forgot to mention, exotics can also be crafted but that requires both gold and mats (materials) and level 400 in the right crafting professions.
Ascended can be crafted but it requires level 500 in crafting and ascended mats as well as regular mats.
Dungeons give you a set 60 tokens per completed dungeon at the final chest. I don’t think they drop any.
You can also get exotic weapons, armor and dungeon tokens from doing spvp and wvw reward tracks.
yea about the professions, that much I do understand. I am just still confused about one thing and that if there is no gear grind in the game then what would using tokens from dungeons benefit me any?
Ok, so I understand it now. Thanks for all of your help Bruno and I hope I enjoy the game.
You can use the dungeon tokens to buy a set of exotic armor and weapons with different stats than what you have. There is a dungeon merchant in Lions Arch who will show you what each dungeon has to sell and the stats that they have.
Also this game has a wardrobe system. So most people do end up collecting all the dungeon gear for the looks. This game is really look driven.
Dungeon tokens get you armor with particular looks (skins) that you can’t get anywhere else in game. It is also an easy way to get exotic armor of various stats; different dungeons have different stat sets, three sets per dungeon. You can get an easy preview of it by going to Lion’s Arch by the WvW/fractals portals and walking up the outer ring .. east side? it’s on the left as you run in from the bridge … to talk to the dungeon vendor there.
You can click on each dungeon’s gear to see the token costs and stat sets — remember to scroll all the way down the armor list to see all three — and right click on any armor piece (or weapon) to get a preview of it on your character. Note that you’ll be able to dye it differently from the default preview colors and that can make quite a difference to its attractiveness.
Every time you complete 8 dungeon paths you get a bonus box of 150 tokens from the dungeon of your choice, even one you’ve never been to afaik. You can join any explorable path if someone else opens it, but you cannot open it yourself until you have done the story path once on that character.
Once you buy any dungeon item — make sure to get the exotic versions, those are the unique skins — the skin will unlock in your wardrobe and any of your alts can use the skin on any gear for the cost of one transmutation charge per application.
My advice would be to level a character naturally, to learn the game and Profession of choice. Skipping all that Core Tyria offers would be a shame.
Regardless, keep in mind you already have end-game gear. It’s just a matter of choosing different stats, should you want to.
It takes some time to acquire Ascended gear, which is really only necessary for high-level Fractals. Some Raid groups may ask you to be fully geared in Ascended, but others will not. Often, only Ascended Trinkets are requested.
Welcome to Tyria, and good luck.
I second leveling naturally. I get why the free boost exists (so you can play HoT areas), but it really, REALLY kills the experience of the game.
There has yet to be anything like stepping out into Queensdale for the first time and feeding some cows. I know probably no one does that event anymore, but it just defined the game for me.
By skipping leveling normally, even for a little bit, you leave yourself unfamiliar with a number of the game’s systems and mechanics.
If you just wanted to PvP you didn’t need to burn the booster since everyone is leveled to 80 automatically in PvP anyway.
RIP City of Heroes
Have you actually finalized the booster? You said you were still in the trial area. It’s not “burned” until you decide to do so, at which point it vanishes from your shared inventory slot so you can use the slot for other things.
I imagine the quickest way to gear up is to buy gems with cash, convert them to gold, and then buy the gear off the trading post. But I assume you want to earn the gear by playing the game.
Unfortunately, there is no quick fix there. You can purchase exotic equipment with gold or with karma, but as a new player you have neither. I imagine your best bet is to jump into some PvE.
Since you’re confident enough to dive right into PvP, I imagine you’re the sort of player who handles PvE content well, even if it isn’t really your preference. If that sounds like you, then you might do well to pick up the HoT storyline.
The storyline will lead you to the first HoT map (Verdant Brink) where you will begin to work toward unlocking the masteries that make navigating the map possible. This requires both earning mastery points and filling your experience bar.
In the process of unlocking masteries, you should participate in as many as events as possible. The events reward experience, loot, and map currency which you will need to purchase your exotic equipment (each piece costs 500 airship parts + 1g). Also note that a tier 4 win during the night cycle on this map automatically rewards a chest containing your choice of exotic armor pieces.
