New to this game.
Well I guess there isn’t much to say other than welcome and hope you have fun.
Elementalist definitely. Closest to a Mage you’ll get.
Just don’t play GW2 like WoW. The game play style is very different. Go into GW2 with a fresh mindset and don’t carry over any old habits from other MMOs. This will help you see GW2 for what it is, and not compare it to others.

Thank you, but maybe i didn’t make my point clearly, i am looking for suggestions for a class or profession to choose which has a similar play style to the fire mage of WOW, .

Thank you very much. I am not really interested in comparing these games i just like the play style.
Do elementalist first if you’re planning to be a good player, as elementalist benefits the most from excellent play style while getting destroyed the hardest by less-than-perfect play styles.
You won’t get to play a fire mage sorry. Though ele comes the closest you will be severely gimping yourself if you just stay in fire
Ele is the closest class to any mage but it does not play like a classic caster at all.
Your best bet would just see how the game plays, make a class that sounds interesting to you and check it out
Long time mage player from WoW here. There is no analog to a fire mage nuker from wow per se. A staff elementalist in fire attunement may be the closest thing to it. But ele’s don’t really play like mages, they are more of a jack of all trades kind of profession. They do well at tanking, kiting, have decent heal abilities. Best thing to do is try the ranged classes if you’re wanting to go that route and see which one you enjoy most. All classes do decent dps so it’s more of a question of finding something that suits you. Try a mesmer, totally different than anything from wow. Good dps and control abilities, with some really good range.

I second the Mesmer- they are awesome- I have two
I used to play a fire mage in WoW too. If you liked the aspect of being in close and doing burst damage then dagger/dagger elementalist might be for you. If you enjoyed the single target burst damage while standing at range then, no, elementalist is not for you.
The fire mage in WoW was a bit hectic but you had tools to do burst damage while in close and at range. The class also had great control abilities over their opponents. In GW2, the elementalist cannot weapon swap. If you go dagger/dagger then mid-fight you cannot switch to staff for range, and vice versa. The staff is also not a single target burst weapon.
thank you all for your suggestions, i’ll mess around with a few specs and see if i find one i like but i did start an elemental fire attuned just to check it out.
