I am 100% new (and currently installing) and would like a few tips from you seasoned players out there. I played WoW for many years, so I’m not new to MMOs altogether.

What are some gems of advice you can offer a new person? Little tips that can save me some trouble? Thanks in advance! I am psyched to get started!

Funny, I am doing the exact same thing right now (and am also a former WoW) player. Good to know there are some others out there

Do at least 5% damage to everything, even stuff your not going to stick around an loot.
Always do events if your nearby (unless it bugged or you know its extremely long )
Save all your Karma because legendary weapons take at least a 3-4 month worth.
Mine/Log/Gather anything you are running over top of.
Mine/Log/Gather anything of value of you are running nearby.
Always team up with others on kills because you get the same exp/loot for less effort.

I think I posted this somewhere else earlier, but in addition to the tips above:

1) When you are in combat, learn to use the dodge key. Unlike WoW you are able to move while hitting stuff and dodge oncoming attacks, and learning to dodge effectively at an early stage is going to really help you when you get to higher levels.

2) When you’re roaming about and you see a ‘New event nearby!’ message pop up on your screen, on your minimap there will be orange icons of either crossed swords, a shield or a bucket with an arrow pointing into it. These Dynamic Events are really good for EXP so go over and help out – what you need to do for that particular event is described on the top right of the screen.

3) When you get defeated, you’ll go into a ‘downed’ state and get 4 skills. Target the closest thing with the least amount of HP. If you defeat it while you are ‘downed’, you can ‘Rally!’ and get back up again.

4) Buy a crude salvage kit and use it on the armour and weapons you get that sell back to the vendor for under 20 copper (I think in WoW the process is called disenchanting but I’m not familiar with WoW). The raw materials you get from salvaging the loot (copper ore, jute scrap, green wood log, etc.) will sell for more on the trading post (default hotkey o) than selling the equipment back to the vendor.

5) Once you’ve settled on a profession you like, try out every weapon that is available to that profession. They all have different 1~5 skills.

6) You are able to bank collectibles (ores, logs, scraps, gems, food ingredients, etc) from your inventory straight into your bank. Inventory space is precious especially at lower levels when you only have 4 slot bags, so use and abuse this feature freely as you’re going around gathering stuff.

I can offer 1 bit of advice, find a guild that is newbie friendly and has people that are knowledgeable about the game available to answer your questions. I know in my guild myself and a few others answer any questions that are passed our way whenever we’re online.

I would advise not to expect the game to be like WoW. It does bear similarities but you have to approach GW2 with a different mindset. IE there is no vertical gear progression in GW2 so the goal isn’t about getting better gear than the content or your enemy. What it is about depends on you and what you enjoy.

My homeworld is Blackgate.
I am a GW2 player in New Zealand.

Don’t pick the necromancer class.

Don’t listen to posts like these.

Also, in GW2, the endgame does not start at 80- the leveling process is the endgame. You’ll have access to all skill slots by 30 and all weapon skills from the beginning (once you unlock them). Don’t rush to cap or you’ll miss a lot of the content- relax, take your time, and explore.

In PvP, everyone is autoleveled to 80- in sPvP, everyone has the same general stats and all trait points unlocked. I’d recommend going to the Heart of the Mists area (through the sPvP window) to test out builds.

There is also no tank/healer/DPS trinity in GW2 for dungeons- instead, it’s a soft trinity of damage/support/control. If you sit in front of a boss, it will kill you- there’s no dedicated healer class and no tank. Everyone is responsible for their own healing and for avoiding damage with dodges/blinds/blocks/etc should they catch aggro. It’s a hard change, especially if you go in on a PUG, but you’ll get it down with practice.

Other than that, keep an open mind and have fun.

Be friendly, when you see someone fighting a bunch of mobs or just one mob, help them finish it off. In this game everyone gets loot and xp aslong as you damage a mob (5% someone said earlier).

When you see a round icon with a skull on it on the minimap or map, it means an npc is dead and can be revived. But if you see a blueish or white symbol that looks abit like this —> \o/ it means there’s another player who is dead or downed and you can go revive them!
