I’m waiting for my friends to get in from work/ log online so I can find out what server they’re currently playing on.

If I enter one server, can I make a new character on their server when I find out what server they’re on or am I server bound to which ever I pick at the start?

You can switch servers once a day for free right now.

As stated above, the current system allows free server transfers once every 24 hours, but (correct me if I’m wrong here) I distinctly recall Anet mentioning that they will eventually charge for server transfers. So that’s something to watch out for.

They will but they also announced that they will give advanced warning for when the charge kicks in.

Yes you can switch server for free, once per day at the moment (but this is temporary). What you can’t do is make a character on a different server – all your characters are tied to one home world.

At a later date we will have guesting, where you can bring a character from your home world into another one for a while to play, but that’s not available yet. So just be aware that whatever world you’re on, all your stuff is there until you shift.
