Hello, have been playing three days; and am oh-so-slowly assimilating the way the game works (and this is an excellent forum! the stickied tips are wonderful)

My character is a level 14 Ranger.

“11.Be sure to save 10 silver for when you hit level 11, as you have to buy access to your traits”.

First, where/how do I do this? I may have done so, cannot tell.

Second, I mis-clicked and spent 2 points on a second “Trait Guide [Vigorous Renewal]”. I cannot use it as it is already unlocked. Am I right in thinking I have lost the points that cost?

Many thanks in advance!

They’ve changed the way traits works and number 11 is no longer valid.

Trait points now become available at level 30. If you click on the traitline the traits are listed down the left hand side. If you hover over the spy glass it will tell you how to unlock them. You can either do a certain thing in the world (JP’s, events, mini dungeons, dungeons etc.) or buy them from the trait trainer.

This explains how traits now work – http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Traits

With regards to the second part I’m not sure sorry.

I have not used the new system. Do you get an actual item to unlock the trait? If so is it account bound? If account bound it can be used on another character created later.

Many thanks to you both for your quick and useful replies.

Trait points now become available at level 30.

Aha! Now I see; and that makes sense. (So I best not rely on guides or explanations written prior to this change.)

Do you get an actual item to unlock the trait?

Yes. It is bound to account.

If account bound it can be used on another character created later.

I am not sure if I will use it on another character or not, but have stowed it for now. It is in my bank. Likely I will make something like a Guardian, so I am sure that could be handy. I’ll also delete my first test character I made (after transferring all his stuff), so will be sure to buy things with his skill points before I do!

Any characters created after April 15 use the new trait system. Any characters created before but not yet at level 80 got all their traits grandfathered in. They just need to level up to get the new trait points but do not need to unlock the traits.

If you are buying the trait guides then you get an account bound item.
If you do the content to unlock there is no item involved. They function similar to the bonus chest from a world boss/dungeon/daily/etc.
