Nodes and Jute?

Hello everyone! I’m still really new to the game, and one of the things I’m struggling with are nodes and other supplies. I’ve looked at online resource maps of Queensdale, and they say there are tons of nodes for logs, copper, and plants, but I can find maybe two! And when I do harvest them, they don’t seem to come back. Is there a timer on them or something? The same goes for crafting supplies like Jute. I’ve been told that camping at Bandit’s Haunt can get you like 100+ Jute per hour and I’m lucky if I get 15.

I’m coming from RuneScape, so I’m really not used to trees not being grouped together and ore not being in a mine, so I have a lot of questions. But for now, where are all the nodes!?

Thanks!

Ore nodes, trees and edible plants are scattered around the world. In some places you’ll find groups together, but in most cases you’ll get just one on it’s own.

The best way to find them is just to look out for the map icons. Although if you’re looking for something specific it can be helpful to check websites too.

And yes after you’ve used one it will dissapear (or rather go into a ‘used’ state, for example trees are replaced with stumps). They are on a timer but I’m not sure how long it is. Long enough that it’s not worth standing there waiting for it to come back.

Sometimes if your server is doing well in WvW you can get a bonus which lets you use a node more than once, in which case you’ll have the option to do it again as soon as the animation has finished.

Hello Azrael and welcome to GW2 =)

Yes, there is a timer on nodes and most of them are not grouped together, so you’re expected to run around the map to find them. I think that was part of the design, so that you actually get out and explore Queensdale rather than just camp out at the Runite Ore spawn spot and hope you don’t get killed on your run back.

Some things that can be grouped together are the ‘plants’. For example just south of the Caudecus’ Manor dungeon (it’ll be that door icon in your full world map), there’s an enclosed space with some bulls and I think it’s lettuce that spawns in that little plantation.

Bandithaunt caverns is a great place to get jute, but you get a lot more materials from salvaging. Salvaging is basically taking apart a piece of armour or weapon you don’t need and getting raw crafting materials from it. You need to buy a Crude or Basic Salvage Kit from a merchant and use it on your unwanted loot.

I would recommend salvaging all the armours and weapons you can’t use from Queensdale as the materials you can get from them are far more valuable than selling these armours and weapons to a vendor. Once you get beyond Queensdale you may have to think twice before salvaging certain items, but while you’re in Queensdale, just salvage everything you don’t need.

There are icons on the minimap showing where the nodes are, look out for those. Also, in my opinion you shouldn’t camp but rather get out and explore the world. Just salvage all the cloth armor you find and soon you’ll have a ton of jute. Welcome to GW2

Yea this is nothing like RunEscape so don’t expect the nodes to respawn in 2 seconds or fear someone else stealing it . As it was mentioned most of the time nodes are pretty spread out and you can sometimes come across a rich vein which has multiple harvests and are often guarded by a vet . Its not a bad idea to have a back up pick, scythe and axe in your inventory as well just in case you run out in the middle of your harvesting as well

Thanks guys! Sorry for taking so long to reply. I salvage everything I get my hands on, but I still don’t seem to be doing very well. As for carrying a second set of gathering tools; that’s a good idea! I’ve got a second set in the bottom of my bag now. Also, is there a way to see nodes on the main world map? Or do they only show up on the minimap?

They only show up on the minimap.

It’s a kitten conspiracy. Kittens gonna be kittens. All is vain!

Often you can end up crossing entire maps by following gathering nodes. You’ll see one on your mini-map, run towards it, and by the time you get there another one will show up on the mini-map and you can run towards it… etc. All maps have a decent spread of nodes, though some might be particularly good for a specific resource. I really think that rather than stay in one place, your best bet is to travel, explore and map and grab resources as you go, because you’ll find more as you cover more ground.

Important things to note include that gathering nodes are instanced per character, so if you mine an ore node it disappears for you, but anyone else who hasn’t mined there will still see it. So no need to fight over nodes! They will become ‘used’ for some time and then refresh, as others have said, but it’s not worth waiting around for (come back after more travelling if you must). Also for jute and other cloth/leather, you can get it from salvaging the right kinds of things, or you can get it from the bags some enemies (notably centaurs and bandits in Kryta) drop. Again, if you fight a lot of these enemies, you should acquire some cloth in the course of things, plus other crafting materials needed for insignias.

For jute the ideal area would be altar brook vale and bandithaunt caverns in queensdale. The bags from the bandits will give fine crafting materials and they drop shredded garments which salvages into jute. Centaurs also drop similar bags but I think they tend to drop the leather salvage material instead.

For logging, mining and harvesting, maybe try messing with your mini map. I found getting the zoom right makes these nodes alot more visible.
