Guild Wars 2

So topic says I am new to game. Forgive me, I tried to google/youtube answer. The Thief auto attack has several ranks in the chain. Does the chain progress on its own, or do I have to continue to hit auto button? Also, the last part of the chain is a backstab. How do I know what part of the chain is about to trigger so I can get in position for BS?

The chain progresses on it’s own, you don’t have to keep hitting the button. That would make the auto attack feature pointless.

The backstab only happens when you are in stealth.
