I’ve been mostly soloing, so I haven’t really played with friends and I have some questions.

When you start out with friends do you all have to be of the same race?
If not, how do you get to their zone?
Does it cost to change servers?

If you are on the same server, different races can lvl together, just gotta travel there. Look for a purple glowing thing on map. (still need to return for class quests though).

On different servers, can’t at all. There is currently no charge to change servers.

You can play together if you are on different servers. You all have to get into the overflow and then choose to stay in overflow.

If you want to play with friends you don’t have to be the same race, you can travel to each other’s starting zones pretty easily by using the asura gates in each main city.

However, you should all try to roll on the same server. Currently server transfer is free, but eventually you’ll have to pay for server transfers so get everyone on the same server while you can. There will also be a “guesting” feature that will allow you to transfer servers temporarily to play PvP and PvE (no WvW), but there’s no news on when that’s going to be implemented.

Last I heard guesting on other servers was going to become available when the free transfers end, but there’s not date for that yet (whenever ArenaNet decide server populations have settled down).

Each race’s starting area has a capital city which has an asura gate to Lion’s Arch (the purple blob on the map mentioned above). Lion’s Arch has gates to every other race’s city, so you can all pick one starter area and go play over there! You’ll need to go to your own area to progress personal story, but you don’t have to do that really.
