OMG If you only knew this - tips for new players
good post thanks
hey! I tried to load the page and it could not be found I am new to this game lvl 10 and I was just looking for people to play with or to get info from. my char name is My Critz so get ahold of me if you would thanks
25. #1 ability is your auto-attack, so you don’t need to keep spamming it like I did…
To add to this, you can shift+right click to either turn off auto attack or turn any other skill into an auto-cast. I tried it on a heal one time, i found it useless but it was quite entertaining.
Unless of course that changed, which i hope it hasn’t.
Been playing since the release, just found out all those Mystic Forge stones that I’ve been piling up can be used to make a much more cost-effect 250 use salvaging kit.
Hold control highlights all enemies and yellows (including collectables) in the direction you are looking.
You can enable this all the time in the options menu. It’s great for seeing the text names of characters who are trying to hide behind obstructions in PVP
I think this does not work for collectables for a heart / event. I still find I need to hold down the left CTRL key. Only character names etc. work.
Can anyone confirm this?
Keybindings.
You can bind combined entries, which is very helpful. For example, try binding 6, 7, 8, 9 and 0 to something like Shift+1, Shfit+2… Shfit+5. That way you can activate those skills without having to take your hand away from movement keys (AWSD).
Thanks for all the tips
The one about the bag replacement was exactly what I was looking for!
Thanks again
I only looked throught the first 2 pages, and did not see some of this so forgive me if they have already been posted. The most asked questions I hear is how do you split a stack:
To split a stack of materials or items click on the item and move them to a new location while holding down the CTRL key. You will get a pop up that allows you to select the number of the new stack. It defaults to half the original stack.
Right clicking on an item in your inventory gives you the option to: get a price check on the trading post from anywhere in the world, lets you destroy it, lets you mail it (sometimes), or lets you send it to your bank (sometimes). There are ocassions where you don’t want to send all your materials/minipets to your bank.
Rangers can name each of their active pets, store them, swap them, and put them on offensive, defensive, or passive.
The LFG tool tells you what server you are currently on (if you are guested and forgot, or think you are guested and are maybe back on your home world).
outstanding. I knew most of them but there are a few true gems in there! GREAT WORK!
Elder Moot Council
You can see resource nodes on the minimap if you zoom in <——- get that kitten on the list! I didn’t figure out untill I was level 70. :/
Sometimes you will see another player calling for help in chat, in the form of “rez pls at [somethingsomething waypoint]”, or “champ up at [somethingsomething waypoint]”.
For those of us who do not know where every waypoint is on a given map, instead of hovering the mouse cursor over every waypoint on the map to find the right place you can click on the linked location in the chat window itself (gold-coloured link iirc) and your view will immediately switch over to the map, centered on that location.
Cheers
thanks this is really helpful
Thanks a lot, very helpful!
If you’re missing one heart in a map and cannot find it, look for the spyglass icon of a scout. The scouts show up on your map (and mini-map) until you’ve done their heart.
HELLO FRIEND
CAN YOU HELP ME WITH THE RED TRIANGLES IN THE MAP I DONT WHAT TO DO I GO TO A PLACE WITH A TRIANGLE AND NOTHINF HAPPENS WHTA SHOULD I DO?
THANKS
“11. Be sure to save 10 silver for when you hit level 11, as you have to buy access to your traits” —> much better to buy it on Trade Post – half the price there.
Also that belongs here I believe… thanks to Lilith Ajit.6173:
“You exchange your soul bound tools for account bound by un equipping them and bringing them to the black lion weapon specialist. That’s at the top of the Lions Arch trade post if you didn’t know.”
(…)Right clicking on an item in your inventory gives you the option to: get a price check on the trading post from anywhere in the world, lets you destroy it, lets you mail it (sometimes), or lets you send it to your bank (sometimes). (…)
… right clicking actually gets you the sell on trading post, not just price check. You can also send mats to the bank by using cogwheel on inventory window -> deposit all collectibles. As someone before mentioned, sending all mats to bank, putting loot on trade, salvaging and again – sending to bank is the best way how to stay happy will small bags.
A question, by the way; is there any use for obsolete, soulbound, non priced equipment, beside trashing it?

Should probably add a few things.
First, the music modification information is here. Note that just dumping music in the folder won’t work, you must name the playlists as given. I overwrite Guild Wars 2 music with Touhou remixes.
Second, you can access a bank at any crafting station on the map, not just those marked as banks.
Third, you can access a crafting station-bank easily from any location on the world map by going to your world’s Borderlands in World vs World, then running a few seconds east from the portal. This is a non-capturable location, so this always works. However, larger servers may have queue problems. This is, however, perfect for small worlds.
Fourth, you can access the Trading Post easily from any location on the world map by pressing O – you can buy and sell items, but you cannot collect the items or gold you get. If you want to collect them, use ANY world vs world borderland and you’ll be able to access a TP there. This also gives you access to a merchant to buy kits/tools/w/e.
Fifth, if you have quick need of a Mystic Forge, consider checking if your world owns all the keeps in its borderlands. If it does, chances are that you can access the Forge by waypointing to the Garrison waypoint – the Forge is in the Lord’s room; this may not work if the waypoint upgrade is not built. A way that always works is to visit the PvP lobby and use the Forge there, but since the only way out from the PvP lobby is to Lion’s Arch, this may not be an optimal method.
For tips 3 to 5, note that you can flash-exit World vs World by exiting out to character select, and then reentering the game with the same character. This automatically boots you out of World vs World into the same spot where you were before you warped to World vs World. Now you know why I like to use this to bank/TP/mforge so much, it’s essentially a free bank that only takes a few seconds to activate, as opposed to waypointing to a bank, which requires running back to your original location, and which involves waypointing costs. I have a perm merchant I summon at will so it’s not needed for that purpose, but this method is convenient enough that I don’t exactly see the need to buy either a permanent TP or banker NPC, not to mention that since only one is summonable at any time, the one being used the most often is always the merchant.
Sixth, confusion damages you when you trigger any attack. Aside from certain ways of removing conditions without using a ‘skill’ like swapping water attunements on an ele, the other usual way of dealing with a high-stack confusion is simply to not attack at all. But most people play with Auto Attack on skill 1 on. To stop attacking, simply left click on the ground, and you’ll deselect all targets.
Seventh, some environmental weapons do not have Auto Attack by default. You can enable it manually to avoid spamming 1. Some weapons of relevance here are the dredge door blaster in Dredge fractals, and the rocket launchers people use against Jormag.
Eighth, to Interrupt an attack is to use any control effect like Stun, Knockdown, Daze, or whatnot on a target as it channels the attack. This puts the skill on a cooldown. This is of extreme importance in killing guards/supervisors in WvW – at certain health thresholds they will heal; if you interrupt the heal, you can kill them much faster. This allows for easier camp/sentry soloing. It’s also important in many other fights.
Ninth, Defiant is a stack champion and above class mobs have that nullify control effects. The number of stacks a mob has depends on the number of players in the vicinity. Try to reduce the number of defiant stacks to zero, then keep it that way until the mob uses a skill you must interrupt for some reason, so that your interrupt will not be blocked by Defiant.
Tenth, Sink and Float control effects pierce defiant, so underwater enemies of any class can be Interrupted at will.
Eleventh, there is no need to repair your armor when a yellow shield appears (ie, you get killed once). You only need repair after they turn red (ie, you get killed 8 times and above). So don’t repair your armor until it’s either red or you’ve cleared the map to save yourself unnecessary time running back and forth/money waypointing to a repair shield.
Twelfth, you CANNOT wear two of the same ascended accessory/ring. If you want that stat combination repeated, buy one defensive and one offensive infusion version. This has cost countless players laurels for no good reason.
Thirteenth, bags can be unequipped by dragging them out of the slot into the inventory. Because of this, you can buy a single set of 20 slot bags once, and buy cheap 10 slot bags for all other characters. Then when you’re switching your main character for a while, move all the 20 slot bags to another character, so you don’t have to buy multiple copies.
Fourteenth, if you’re the host of a dungeon/fractal and you leave the party or disconnect, your entire party may be kicked from the dungeon/fractal. Don’t start unless you can finish, or people will hate you for good reason.
Finally, basically all non-dagger melee attacks Cleave – that is, they hit up to 3 targets in the front arc of the user within its maximum usage range. This is important for two reasons – firstly, it only hits the front arc, so moving to the back arc before it hits makes the attack deal zero damage. Secondly, knowing it hits multiple targets should change how you think about engaging enemies. Related to this is that all piercing attacks can hit a given number of targets on the way to its target. When using a ranged piercing attack, try to aim for a far target and hit targets in between using the pierce ability, rather than targeting the nearest one first all the time, and you might see up to a tripling of your DPS against groups of foes. The number of players who can’t use Pierce and Cleave effectively is very, very large.
Recently learned this one.
If you’re swimming and need to get to the surface fast, hold down Jump. You’ll move upwards in addition to whatever direction you are going.
9. Don’t delete your first character without first sending your backpack, goggles to your new char
Is this referring to the starter backpack? Haven’t been able to get the starter backpack off one toon and onto another. Also what are the goggles referring to?
“Why do I need damage? I brought a thief.”
One thing that I’ve noticed newbies, and even a lot of familiar players, seem to be not fully grasping is the downed state. Something a lot of us who have been following the game since development stage take completely for granted.
The first major point I’d like to raise is that the downed state is not “dead.” If you are downed you are not dead in any sense of the word. If you are being downed a lot but rallying you are not “dying a lot.” There seems to be some confusion here. Actually, it’s quite the opposite — sometimes, allowing your character to be downed is in your best interest, for several reasons, which I’ll touch on here.
The first reason is because rallying from the downed state can actually leave you with more HP than you had before you were downed. If you’re running around, hiding, and dodging like mad because you only have 5% HP, don’t worry about it — just fight as fiercely as you can and then allow your character to be downed. If you can rally, you’ll get back on your feet with a significantly higher HP and can continue fighting.
The second reason is that being downed gives you a whole new set of skills. Some classes have such good downed skills that in many circumstances you have a better chance of survival being downed so that you can use them; for instance mesmers and thieves can teleport and stealth while downed, elementalists can become invincible for a good few seconds and move freely back to safety, warriors can even get right back up at the press of a button. For this reason being downed can actually be beneficial to your survival.
Another big reason is timing, and here I’ll touch on an important and oft-overlooked mechanic. If you are fighting three enemies, as an example, and two are at high HP with one being at 10% HP, if you are having trouble staying on top of the fight, just allow your character to be downed. In the downed state, you now have a good ten seconds (depending) to finish off that first enemy, and when you do, you will be rallied with a good bit of HP for killing an enemy while downed. Now compare that to finishing off the first enemy, then being downed, and now you have two enemies at full HP and no hope of taking one out before you die. A good player will always consider timing their downed state in this way and it will become habit once you start using the downed state to your advantage.
Which brings me to my final, and most fundamental and important point. One thing I’ve been downright frustrated about for the past few months is how few players seem to even be aware that a downed player will rally instantly if they kill an enemy from the downed state. WvW and PvE are just full of people who sit there spamming Bandage over and over while enemies die all around them. In dungeons, as a high DPS character, rather than running in gonzo and trying to revive a downed team mate, I will target an enemy right next to them and finish them off quickly and efficiently. Recently I’ve been frustrated to find that more often than not, the person is not even trying to rally themselves, they’re just sitting there spamming skill #4 and waiting for someone to come over and heal them. Do not sell yourself short — pay attention to the way the fight is going in your immediate area, and target a dying enemy. If you have damaged an enemy and that enemy dies while you’re downed, even if another player lands the killing blow, you will instantly be rallied back onto your feet to continue fighting. This is the way an effective player handles the downed state more often than any other option.
so helpful! this is great!
What a great thread! Lots of good advice here
1. Join a guild. There’s nothing better than joining a guild where you meet with players from around the world. Enjoy your guild bonuses and get challenged in guild missions. Most of all, HAVE FUN
2. I’ve noticed many new players (and experienced ones) ressing a downed during a battle. While this is good, but ressing another player is not a good idea in poor timing, including:
- You are outnumbered by the enemy.
- You have low health at the time but your heal skills are still on cooldown
- Do you have any conditions on you? Bleeding, confusion, torment causes you to lose health. How many stacks are they? How long is the duration?
I’m not saying that you should ignore the downed, but timing make a huge difference between a successful event or a big fail (such as a dungeon wipe).
3. Utility skills such as the warrior’s Battle Standard and the guardian’s Signet Of Mercy resses DOWNED allies, not DEFEATED. These skills also are able to ress NPCs that you are able to ress normally via F. This is super helpful in group events, dungeons, and WvW (where it is difficult to ress the downed, ressing the Lord in your keep after it dies!).
4. Always gather from nodes, even if it’s a t1 materials. Yes, it might not sell much, and it is annoying to steer out of the way to collect 3 copper ores. However, they do sell on the Trading Post. I had sold 3 stacks of copper ore for 90c EACH (Total 6Gold 75 silver) on the trading post (when it was trading well). Money
5. If you want to purchase items in-game (not the gem store), always check the trading post to see if buying from an NPC or via trading post is cheaper.
6. You can still call target (Ctrl+T) even if you’re not in a party.
7. The crafting stations/personal bank/trader can be found in your Borderlands. Sometimes its just easier to go into WvW (which costs nothing!) instead of waypointing (costs more money) to the cities…
8. If you’re in need of killing the poor bunnies/chickens/flys for the daily “Ambient Killer”, press left+CTRL to see any ambient creatures in your area.
9. You can set nicknames in your friends/followers list.
10. If you want a screenshot without yourself in the picture, type /sleep, press CTRL+Shift+H, adjust the angles, and screenshot away!

I…. did not know most of the stuff posted here lol.
and I played for almost a year, have legendary and full ascended gears and everything….. shame on me…. shame on me……
That /wiki tip is gold. Thanks!
11. is not accurate anymore
37. You can /kneel in front of statues and idols to receive some short-term boons.
Tried this several times, but didn’t see any sign of boons. dose it work without a boon icon?
And like to add tip here: while you running, hold down right-mouse-click, then you can pilot you running direction.
Is it possible to change my race?
P.S thanks for the wiki I wanted to ask about this storage for the whole account :P
Maybe wiping this thread and starting a new one since some of the gameplay dynamics have changed?
One important: kittening runes doesn’t give more bonuses beyond the first one if you don’t have one of its siblings equipped.
25. #1 ability is your auto-attack, so you don’t need to keep spamming it like I did…
shifty eyes I knew that…
LOL! Hilarious part is I STILL do it even though I know better. Don’t laugh. I’m sure there’s a lot of you who do it too. At least that’s what I’m going to tell myself.
I would add:
- If you see a mesmer (player) near you in PvE, and he/she puts down Chaos Storm on top of you (it’s the purplish lightning storm). Do NOT run out of it. It adds conditions to the mob, but it gives you buffs (Aegis, Swiftness, Retaliation), and it refreshes them each time it pulses. I can’t tell you the number of times I have tried to help a person out, and they run out of it.

29. There is a range indicator on your abilities. There’s a red bar below the skill if you’re out of range.
Was that always there? I swear I’ve never noticed it before. I have 11 characters at 80, 1 at 63 and 9 of my lvl 80s have 100% map completion…..so I have been pretty oblivious. o.o

If you’re swimming and need to get to the surface fast, hold down Jump. You’ll move upwards in addition to whatever direction you are going.
You can also map a key so you can go down. I used ‘C’ as it is right there above my spacebar. That way I don’t have to point my camera angle down to descend and it makes fighting underwater easier.
thanks for the tips! really useful

Not 100% true. If you want to have the same ascended ring twice, say Ring of Read Death as an example, infuse one but not the other and it will work. Technically, it is not the same since one is infused and one is not but almost.

Awesome list! I’m about to start playing and I feel much better prepared now!
Thanks!
9. Don’t delete your first character without first sending your backpack, goggles to your new char
I just recently came back to GW2 (mostly just played a little at launch and here and there casually since) and I honestly can’t even remember if my main character was the first I ever made, although I’m inclined to guess not. You see, I’m a severe altoholic and you don’t start with as many slots as there are classes to try!
Anyway, would anyone be willing to tell me – what are the googles and backpack and why is it a good idea to keep them? I’m fairly certain I don’t have either of those items anymore…
Welcome back! I’m not sure abt googles, but backpack is that bag where you put all of your items. Unlike other equipment, backpack is not bound if you use it, so basically you can switch it between your characters anytime
Truly useful thread you have here chief.

Thanks For The Helpful Discussion … A Huge Time Saver For Tips For New Players Like Myself.
Thanks for the tips! I’m new to GW2 and this will definitely help me in my travel.
Good read during the DL. My heads spinning, between this and the combat tips, I hope to have a better understanding when I get in the game.
Some questions about this list…..
1. Where do I buy the pick, axe and sickle that only cost a few copper? I can’t seem to find a merchant anywhere I’ve been that sells them.
10. I don’t know what you mean by a ? quest or a ? guy, can you elaborate further on this?
1. A few coppers is relative, they are 24 copper each. At the very least in any race’s city at the merchant (stacks of coins on map). Other locations are listed in the wiki.
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Gathering_tool
Also this list was written long before they changed up the “New Player Experience” and they removed material nodes out of the lowest level areas on the starter maps. You need to be in a level 6 or 7 area for nodes to show up on the mini map. I think you get a full set at level 9 for free. Lumber and Ore gathering tools are good for 100 “swings” while Foraging Sickles are good for 50.
As you level up and move into higher level areas, you will need higher level and more expensive gathering tools.
10. ? means Renown Heart. Those Hearts you see on the map (assuming you are zoomed in) and and mini map. Upon completion of the “quest” the “quest” giver unlocks and turns into an NPC vendor who can buy junk and stuff but also have items unique to them for karma. Karma is a currency you get for doing Renown Hearts and Dynamic Events. I would argue the notion of “great” stuff but certainly nothing you can buy off the Trading Post or armor/weapon vendors.

Thanks for the “/kneel” tip. Didn’t know that
I’ll add my own.
39. You can set any of your abilities to auto-activate whenever the cooldown is done by CTRL-Clicking on them. Most useful on the standard “1” attack.
40. If you’re being left behind in levels, try crafting. It gives massive XP.
You can only have 1 skill auto though.. having your spammable attack as auto is wiser than having a long cd skill auto, unless you’re willing to spam that hotkey, which I personally wouldn’t want.
Also, anyone knows what sPvP and Fumble means?
For sPvP, I’m assuming server PvP, but just want to be sure. If it’s server PvP, that’s WvW or what? o.o
Possibly answered already but I believe it’s Structured PvP – no doubt will get corrected if I’m wrong :p
