Q:

I dislike playing the class that is most common.
I guess it just makes me feel a bit less unique and useful when joining a group and there are a bunch of others quite similar to me!
I know this game is based around skill, and so it wont be much of an issue but that doesnt change how I feel about this so I have pretty much ruled out Warrior as I hear they are the most common and I’m ok with that, but does anyone know:
Are there any official statistics anywhere about population? Statistics that rank the classes in most commonly used from 1 to 8 would be amazing! However as this probably is not publically listed anywhere, so opinions are more than welcome too. Thanks guys, looking forward to making my decision tomorrow

According to the surveys I’ve seen – class popularity as follows:

1. Warrior
2. Thief (very close w/ guardian)
3. Guardian
4. Elementalist
5. Ranger
6. Engineer
7. Necromancer
8. Mesmer

I’m not sure why you would even want this, being a little unique is ok, but you can be the common class and still use a unique build and play in a unique way.

I personally would say: playing what you want > being a special little snowflake

But if you really want an opinion, I think the least played I have seen is either engineer or necromancer.

But each server is different, and with the massive amounts of players on each server, you will likely run into your professions several times over ;p

I think like this too, almost for the same issues, but I also just like being the under-represented class.

However, in GW2, I don’t think you should worry about it, because there’s no specific roles, so you won’t ever (supposedly) feel unwelcome in a party because of your class.
If you do, think that the ones asking for a specific class might be just… dumb for not grasping this concept (which differs from other MMOs, so they might not know).

Regarding less popular classes… speaking of experience (players I’ve seen and see frequently in the areas I go), I think from the least popular to most are Engineers, Thieves, Guardians, Mesmers, Necromancers, Elementalists, Warriors and Rangers.

Though it’d be nice if they release some sort of statistics just out of curiosity…

If I am pressed to guess the least used profession …its probably mesmer. I have seen some awesome ones out there though. Zietlogik makes a wonderful point. There is enough build flexibility within each profession to still be unique. I play a warrior as one of my 5 characters. Card carrying Altoholic here I dont run into too many rifle/axe warriors and with rifle there is just something satisfying about smacking an ettin halfway across the map with the butt of my rifle

I feel like I’ve seen a lot of necromancers running around. But maybe that’s because they tend to stand out more because of the minions. Or it might be that a lot of people on my server happen to like playing necro.

Personally I wouldn’t worry about it. With thousands of players and only 8 professions even the least popular is going to be fairly common. If you’re worried about getting into groups for dungeons and things I’d say the most important thing is to pick a profession that suits your playstyle – one you can get really good at – because groups are more likely to be looking for skilled and/or experienced players than specific professions.

There’ve been a few surveys. The top main profession shows as Warrior, but only with 15-17%

Warrior (go figger, it’s the top kill-speed)
Guardian
Elementalist
Thief

bottom two consistently are
Necrom-answer and
Mesmer (go figger, the slowest kill-speed)

Yes a good mesmer is hard to fight against in PVP. I guess this question also comes down to which server you are on. I will agree that warriors are everywhere, but i generally see a good supply of every class.

This list looks pretty accurate from what I’ve been seeing.
I’m really weirded out by the lack of Necro’s around, when I first decided on it for my main I kind of expected it to be over-played like mad. But I guess it makes sense, the profession doesn’t really conform to common play-styles from other popular MMO’s out there.

Hoopa doopa.

Thanks guys! See this list is just comprehensive enough to make me happy about my initial choice to play Mesmer!
I was tossing up between that and Guardian and most ppl agree that Guardian is quite common but Mesmer is under appreciated, well lets hope I can figure it out and play an outstanding Mesmer see you in game.
