Overwhelmed Engineer at 80
First I’d check the Guild Wars 2 Wiki, since it has lots of detailed articles about the basics of core gameplay (crafting, dungeos, game modes, etc)
But to be more specific to your questions, I’d say start crafting in the Leatherworking line, and also the Huntsman. There’s no rush, so just do what you can as you can. As for upgrading your gear, assuming you haven’t started crafting, the fastest would be buying off the TP or running dungeons for gear. Just try to get all exotics as soon as you can, which will go quicker than you think (if you run the main fast dungeons, you’ll get easily 5+ gold a day, plus tokens for exotic gear). I don’t main an engineer, so I don’t know a specific build, but the meta stats right now are power, precision, and crit damage, which is the “Berserker” gear set. I’d put points into the Explosives trait line, and trait for grenade kit. It’s a pretty solid weapon of choice for Engi, I know it’s a popular kit for WvW so I assume it’s alright for PvE as well.
Run Citadel of Flame explorable mode path 1 once or twice a day to get Flame Charr Carvings with which you can buy Exotic level 80 Armour and Weapons from Lion’s Arch. It’s the cheapest way to gear up and pretty fast as well. Within a couple weeks you should be full in exotics.
Also do your daily quest each day, either the pve or the pvp one (the pvp is usually faster to do). This way you will get 1 Laurel per day which you can trade for Ascended Rings, Amulet and Accessories in Lion’s Arch.
I also have an Engineer level 80 and use 30/30/0/0/10 with full Berserker Gear (power/precision/critical). Utilities are Grenade kit (ranged dps), Bomb Kit (melee range dps), and Elixir Gun (added support and healing).
I would advise doing crafting when you have a pool of Gold , at least 50g+ because it can be costly. I only do crafting to level my alts.
Other than that, don’t get stressed too much and enjoy playing the way you like
Very good guide here

I did start into Leatherworking and Huntsmen, but haven’t progressed terribly far in either yet.
Was about to ask for advice on making gold, but sounds like running dungeons is the answer. I ran CoF a few times with my Guild prior to taking a break, so I’ve got a headstart on getting that Exotic armor.
In the interest of information, I remember some discussions with other Engi in my guild about which keywords to use. At the time I ended up going Carrion for all my gear. Did anything change about Engineers in the last year that makes Berserker the foremost choice, or is this more of a preference thing?
D’oh. I came back to find my Traits empty, and put them back kind of funny. I’ve also found Bombs hard to work with. How valid would a Grenade Kit, Elixir Gun, Flamethrower build be? Also, any advice on the Pistol/Pistol, Pistol/Shield, or Rifle approach to things?
Other than that, don’t get stressed too much and enjoy playing the way you like
Heh. Since I’ve never had a character in an MMO that can do anything, I don’t really know what I enjoy at this stage. I’ve always been fixated on just leveling up characters before. Well, I do like getting Dyes, and want to explore Transmutation items to get the Armor Skins I like with the Stats I should have.
Thanks for the advice so far. I’ll definitely see about doing more CoF with my Guildmates.
You might like to see the dev engineer video. Itis in the same place as all the update discussions. Maybe someone can post a link? I don’t quite master this phone yet,
As far as I’ve read the various guides available the most accepted gear for general pve purposes is Berserker at the moment. As far as weapons, I think Pistol/Shield and Rifle are accepted the most. Both sets have their blast finisher, with the shield providing some added blocks and rifle doing some extra dps.
Yeah, Berserker is an all around favorite, so it should be fine on an Engi too. A cheaper/more resilient version is the Valkyrie set. As far as skills go, I prefer Pistol/Shield, and toggling to a tool kit. I don’t usually use the elixir gun, but Grenades are good as I said, and flamethrower is fun.
Carrion set for engi isn’t bad, it’s just condition damage is generally looked upon as a weaker form of damage than pure power.
This is a good engineer build for dungeons, it uses bombs and grenades

I recommend using skale venom consumable with that build, you will be able to stack weakness easily
