Q:
Hi guys my laptop just died so I decide to get a desktop pc that can run on all MAXIMUM graphics without lag (> 60fps) all times especially in wvw blob fights coz I mainly just play wvw and so tired of the fps drops even though I’m running on best performance on my laptop.
I’m not very familiar with building custom spec. Could you guys shed some lights on how to build my new pc please? Also roughly how much is it gonna cost? My budget is around £1000 at the most. Thanks in advance
I’ve done some research and come up with this build here:
Kolink Octagon Midi Tower Gaming Case
Asus Z170-E Intel Z170 (Socket 1151) DDR4 ATX Motherboard
Intel Core i5-6600K 3.9GHz (Skylake) Socket LGA1151 Processor – OEM
Team Group Elite 16GB (2×8GB) DDR4 PC4-19200C16 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit
OcUK Tech Labs 120mm Extreme CPU Liquid Cooling Upgrade Bundle
Samsung 250GB 850 EVO SSD 2.5" SATA 6Gbps 32 Layer 3D V-NAND Solid State Drive (MZ-75E250B/EU)
Seagate 1TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache HDD – OEM (ST1000DM003)
OcUK 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) – OEM
MSI GeForce GTX 970 Gaming Edition 4096MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card
Corsair Builder Series CX 600w Modular ‘80 Plus Bronze’ Power Supply (CP-9020060-UK)
Would be very grateful if someone would like to have a look for me! I’ve chosen 16gb ddr4 coz it’s not much more expensive than 8gb. Invested in a decent liquid cooler system coz it looks vital. Also chosen a cosair 600W PSU just to be safe not sure if this high W is needed. I need the cd rom for certain purposes so please spare me on it :p. Also chosen MSI GTX970 coz it looks like this version is the best overall though a bit pricey.
I’m totally noob on the motherboard choice and I’ve no idea AT ALL which to pick….but looks like the default Asus one have quite some good reviews on amazon
The build is not finalised yet and is a bit over budget. Please have a look for me and comment on where I can save some money on and invest in other parts instead. Thanks again guys and gals!

I got a gtx 970 a couple months back and have not seen any frame drops or lag spikes. However, that is a desktop card. I do run everything maxed out but still set character model’s and character display to low because you do not need much more when blob fighting in WvW. I usually see 60-63fps out of combat, 60 with small groups and tower captures, and 50 during blob fights and world bosses/raids.
You should be able to use a video card site to help translate that and look for comparable laptop cards.
Also, I recommend this moves to “players helping players” forum
There isn’t a computer out there that can maintain 60FPS at max settings in big zergs (although some people will try to claim otherwise…); you’ll have to lower character count, reflections, shadows, that sort of CPU-dependent stuff.
For an actual build, get an i5-6600k with a Noctua NH-D15 (Then OC it to at least 4.5GHz), Z170 motherboard, 8GB DDR4 whatever speed you want, a quality 500W PSU, pick a case that looks nice, and put the rest of the money into a GPU. An SSD would also be a nice addition, since you’ll probably have the money for it.
I have no idea what prices are like in the UK so I can’t really make a more specific part list, mostly regarding the GPU or PSU, but 1k GBP should be enough to make a computer that will run the game as well as can be expected

Alternative PSU: https://www.scan.co.uk/products/550w-cyonic-by-seasonic-au-550x-full-modular-80plus-gold-psu-dc-dc-with-120mm-fdb-silent-fan-compact
Both the EVGA 650 and the 550 Cyonic are Seasonic OEM and thus pretty flipping good quality.
Overclock the 6600K and you’ll have a beastly little system. If you can wait, AMD’s new graphics cards are out soon and are stated to retail for $199/£169.
An AIO liquid cooler is better for people new to PC building because you’re less likely to mess up installation vs a massive block of metal like a NH-D14.

Second this, however if tight on cash can always buy a smaller SSD 250gb or so, and just put your OS and GW2 on it, then get a larger HDD like 1-2tb and dump all other files/downloads/misc apps etc. on it. you will need to set up the 2 drives properly but once you have them all set up you will have the benefits of an SSD for gw2 and boot times on your pc, but will not hit the bank nearly as hard. Just my 2 cents.
Edit, just realized you already had that. doh

Don’t get a 120MM water cooler, just get a good air cooler or something like an H100i that has a 240MM rad (and still is only about as good as the Noctua I mentioned earlier). A 390 should run you as much as a 970 and is a slightly better card, or you can wait for a 480 (which was key announced and should come out soon) which should beat either and will be released at a much lower price. Lastly, that PSU isn’t fantastic; Corsair’s CX line is fine for lower-end builds but you want something higher quality for higher end builds. 600W is more then enough power; even a quality 500W PSU can power that computer with plenty of headroom
Don’t forget that you’ll need to buy Windows 7/10, a keyboard, speakers, and a monitor since you’re coming from a laptop. I’m assuming that you already have a mouse.
Don’t buy the 970
Both nvidia and AMD are in the process of releasing their new gen cards. AMD looks promising with the RX 480 @ US$199 for 980 level performance. Hopefully we see reviews soon.
Nvidia’s 1070 and 1080 don’t offer the same value, they haven’t announced the 1060 yet, but it’s just a matter of time.
Right after more research and taking into comments from people I’ve now come up with this build :

Please have a look and further advice are much appreciate!!. Also anyone could tell me if these are compatible with each other? I’m a newbie desktop builder afterall.
That looks fine, although I’m not a fan of the water cooler and you really shouldn’t buy that GPU.
A 970 is a good card, but AMD’s 480 will come out on June 29th and will offer more performance; it’s releasing at $200US so it’ll be something like 160GBP, meaning you can save some money and get a better card. If I were you, I’d order everything but the GPU, wait the rest of June, then just get the card when it releases; the integrated GPU on that 6600k will be plenty to run GW2 without issues on low/medium settings, and after a month you get much more for your dollar by not buying that 970.
Do you really need all the features on that MB? That’s a very high end one, and you could be paying quite a lot of money for features that you may never use. It used to be the case that more expensive “pro” level MB’s had tangible benefits over consumer grade ones, but now with the “gamer” MB’s you get a lot of those benefits at a better price point.
I would personally get a “gaming” MB, for example, if you wanted to stay with Asus (they are a very good brand):

Then you’ll have more budget for your other components, such as better monitor or larger SSD
If you don’t want lag, you need faster internet speeds. If your talking about frame drops dew to not enough power from cpu/gpu/ram, no pc in the world will run WvW blob fights at 60fps at all times. The game will not do it.
