I don’t know which board to post this on. Hopefully this isn’t the wrong one.

A component on the motherboard on my gaming laptop that I’d been using for the last 3 years suddenly fried, and it is apparently irreparable. I’ve decided to get a new PC tower instead of another laptop because I rarely moved it, and I want a more powerful system.
I don’t know what kind of price ceiling I’m working with, but I’m gonna place it at $800 as the absolute maximum. I’d prefer not to go near that price, but I really want a PC that can handle the game at a consistent 60 fps at least at medium graphic settings.

Sorry, if this is the wrong board. I assumed that “Technical Support” only applies to problems on a computer you already have.

I’d also like to clarify that I don’t know anything about graphics cards and CPU or anything like that. It’s just a bunch of random numbers to me.

I also recently blew up my motherboard on my dope gaming rig. I thought about building my own PC, but I wound up getting an HP Envy with all the usual programs like Word and etc., for like 600 bucks. More than capable of running GW2, and that’s the most demanding game I use. I stuck in a better graphics card because I had it and I’m good to go.

Also HP is consistently rated the best or second best in every category by Consumer Reports. Dell is the other one.

Edit: Do you have a monitor already I assume? That adds another hundo or 2 to the price of any computer if you don’t.

I think I’ve figured out the PC I want. I do have a monitor, but it’s not anything special. I’ll probably get a new one some time down the line.

Just make sure you get a graphics card if the computer comes with an internal one only. GPUs are basically what make games run. It’s sort of like using the default tower speakers instead of having external ones with a subwoofer.

Most of them you just literally stick it in the slot and install the drivers that came on the CD.

I’d get something like this:

https://pcpartpicker.com/list/r2ZCqk

I wouldn’t get a prebuilt at your price range since it’s most likely going to be terrible for the price

HAF 912 | i7-3770k @ 4.5 GHz | MSI GTX 1070 GAMING 8GB | Gigabyte Z77X-D3H
EGVA SuperNOVA B2 750W | 16 GB DDR3 1600 | Acer XG270HU | Win 10×64
MX Brown Quickfire XT | Commander Shaussman [AGNY]- Fort Aspenwood

It won’t be a gaming rig, but for GW2 purposes a prebuilt is more than fine. It just saves some hassle if OP doesn’t care about getting really into the PC. You can run GW2 on a cell phone.

You can run it on anything, but running at medium/60FPS is beyond an integrated GPU so you’ll need a GPU on top

It seems like OP is somewhat price sensitive so getting a prebuilt+PSU+GPU or even prebuilt+1050 w/o connector is going to add some money, so building one and possibly saving $100-150 (or just making the dollar go a lot farther) could be worth it.

Especially if OP could reuse his windows key he could save some money

Well custom is always going to be way more for your money, but the cheapo HP Envy I’m on right now can run GW2 at max settings in most areas. I don’t because I’m dangerously close to blowing up the PSU, but it can. I get like 80 FPS when I turn down the graphics.

Just an option.

What one do you have? I’ve seen good deals on HP Envys but they’re always $900-1200, nothing that’s actually cheap

I dunno my wife has an amazon prime memebership and we got it on sale. Not sure if that has anything to do with it. It’s like 12gig RAM, like 2 TB HD, internal graphics could run GW2 but when I put the card in it obviously went through the roof. It was only about 600 bucks. I’d never pay 1200 for this thing that’s outrageous. I’d build an insane gaming rig for 1200.

You can easily up that to an i5, custom cooler and 500gb SSD instead and stay within the budget.

The problem right now is that its pointless to buy anything – if all indications of AMD Ryzen performance and pricing are true, it will turn the entire CPU eco system topsy turvy within a couple of weeks.

But I suppose if you got to go you got to go…

Something like that… Cheaper GPU like the Rx 460 or 1050 is also okay.

This doesn’t seem too bad:

Ryzen 7’s price to performance looks amazing, but unfortunately the 1700 is still US$470, so I doubt OP would fit a whole system in his budget. Ryzen 5 and 3 have no release date yet.

However, it has moved a whole market segment down an entire price level which means the i5/i7’s will have to get cheaper too. Some retailers have already started despite Intel not yet changing MSRP.

Eh where do you live? 1700 is $330 on Newegg (it’s the only US store I know lol). Even here in Sweden where we are taxed up the kitten its only around $410. The 1800X is the one that cost $500.

I have little doubt stores will have to put Intel CPUs on sales… Well, assuming AMD can also keep them well stocked. That’s why it’s a bad time to buy either currently if you are in dire need of a PC – AMD you cant (yet, still a week to go) and Intel is gonna be a poor buy at current prices

Go on amazon there’s a pc that’s 400-500 pounds and it pretty much runs everything and Gw2 easily with the highest quality

Well, the other thing is that sellers tend to sell anything new at a higher price than the stated price often, making the wait longer than one would expect. Recently, for example, we had the i3-7100 selling on Newegg for $139 lulz. And then the motherboards are still sorta pricey.

Just be careful.
