Is there a way to stop the personal story from showing in the tracker so that I can carry on with other things and come back to the personal story later?

I heard there was an option in options to move it out of the main tracker, but I can’t find anything that would do that in options.

It’s called Content Guide. It’s on the first tab of Options, towards the top, under User Interface. You can set it to disable personal story.
