Hi, so my friend and I are new to this game and we are both going to create Human characters to start with. If we want to team up a lot, should we pick the same personal story options upon character creation, or does it not matter?

I don’t think it matters, but I could be wrong. In any event if you are in a party together you can do the personal story missions together regardless. Even if they are different, It would take some back and forth on your guys part though. You do your story, than do his, etc.

“You know what the chain of command is?
It’s the chain I beat you with until you
recognize my command!”

The personal story will have an effect on the missions you’re given and, to a tiny degree, some of the content you might see (the appearance of NPCs in future missions, their dialogue in the world, etc), but they will not prevent your friend from taking part in your missions and vice versa. As long as you’re in a team, if one player attempts to enter a mission, the other player will get the option to join in.

My wife and I chose different races so our story quests didn’t line up. We would do her quest then go back and do mine. If you are in a party with someone doing a story quest you can join them in the instance. It wasn’t long before we chose an Order. Once we were in the same order our quests lined up. After completing her quest I would get a popup asking me if I wanted to progress my story line or stay on the previous quest. We were both able to get credit if we did the quest together.

I would suggest doing whatever story seems interesting to you. The quests come once every few levels so you could easily fit in 2 sets of quests and still have plenty of time between to explore the world. You will have a few chances to sync up and get on the same path again. The first is when you choose an Order. After that, when the Pact is formed. After that the stories are pretty much the same with your choices only branching your for a quest or two.

It should be noted that if you do not want to chose the same Order then you must not accept the progress because if you do the game will switch your order to match the other person. That means every step will need to be done twice.

Hi, so my friend and I are new to this game and we are both going to create Human characters to start with. If we want to team up a lot, should we pick the same personal story options upon character creation, or does it not matter?

The first 9 personal story missions (chapter 1 and chapter 2) will differ if you select how you were raised and your greatest regret differently. You can still do the missions together, but only the person with that mission quest will get xp (the other will get karma). The human story converges at the beginning of chapter 3 (10th quest in, forget what level).

The story will continue to by synced through the end of the game unless you choose different orders. Again, you can still play together, you’ll just have to go back and forth on the missions helping each other out if you choose different paths.

My husband and I tend to choose different paths intentionally, so we could experience more of the racial stories while needing fewer characters.

I find using the wiki to help manage some of the splits helpful, especially since in several instances you get a ‘mission a’ or ‘mission b’ option, and my husband takes one, while I take the other, so that we can see them both.

Hope that helps.

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

The first part of your personal story is based on race. In the first part that is based on race there are branches that are based on some of the choices made when creating your character such as noble, serf or street urchin and what you regret (this is from the human story but each race has similar 3 options). Level 30 until about level 70 (or so) the story is based on what order you choose.

For 2 characters to do the least amount of story levels they should choose the same options when creating their characters. The person who starts the story mission gets credit and the person who is accompanying them gets the choice to also accept the outcome as a completion of their story level, if they had the same story goal when they joined in.

If you are not worried about doing the least amount of story missions then just be in the same party to accompany your friend on his missions and then he can accompany you on yours.

You should play diffrent proffesions, thus you can compensate for the other class’s faults. What you want to play fits more with certain classes. The thumb rule is if you’re using light armor, she should use medium or heavy.

A guardian and a warrior is a bad match, and same is a engineer and a ranger. The best combo is probiliary something like Guardian and Thief. But really, you should just play what you want.

7800 hours ingame, and counting.

What about Warrior and Thief? Human or Sylvari race?

Those will work well enough together, as long as the thief doesn’t mind the warrior chortling about high damage numbers /grin

Race won’t matter other than for flavor, and you’ll have to go back and forth to each others’ starter areas for the personal story. You might want a sylvari simply because it’s been hinted there’ll be some cool story stuff aimed at level 80 ’varis in the expansion, so why not work on one now? (Plus they are a very fun race to play, imo).
