Picking a profession I like...
First off all, PvP is not bout stats. Failing in PvP means you are running the wrong tactics. prefering a playstyle that you can handle very well is a very good thing. prefering a playstyle cause it is more fun means you will get killed.
The most people agree that mesmer is slightly OP in pvp (together with thief, but though the thief can be played ranged, they specialise more in melee)
Arise, opressed of Tyria!
I’ve always felt that the ranger outdamages both of those classes? By quite a bit. As a matter of fact, I’ve never lost a pvp match playing as a ranger.
But like you say, I may just be quite a bit better with the ranger than any other class?
Ranger is extremely good in fights with classes that have no other option than to straight up fight. Against classes like Thief (and sometimes Mesmer), the Ranger gets completely ruined.
ive never noticed any counter class picks in this game… What makes thief/illusionist counter the ranger?
Well, other than my opinion that the thief counters everything, I feel like the thief’s ability to stealth and run up to the Ranger nullify’s the Ranger’s ability to kite and avoid damage. If the thief didn’t constantly jump to me and stealth so that I couldn’t bind him or knock him down, I would be able to take down his limited health supply rather easily with my high crit rate.
However, seeing as both Mesmers and Thieves can avoid damage through guile and take you down without taking much damage, Rangers with their limited survivability cannot live long.
The only time I’ve ever been able to kill a thief 1v1 as a Ranger was when I was able to get the jump on them in WvW.
I’ve managed to take thieves with a ranger 1v1 in pvp. I’m no pro, haven’t even played that much pvp. But I think the key there was my use of evades and sword/horn (had SB on switch). The ranger is never going to kite the thief, but if you’re concious of where they are the ranger can win a melee brawl. Just keep swinging when the thief stealths (this doesn’t work well with a bow) and mind where your back is.
Mesmers are more difficult I found. The clones play havoc with the auto-targetting and it will take a while for me to be able to track both the mesmer and my own character with all of the ranger’s tumble/dodge melee abilities.
I never use a sword/hord or GS build on my ranger. I’m just a bow kind of guy.
Ill admit i’ve had trouble against Mesmers before, but due to my own looking down at cooldowns, instead of watching which clone was the real mesmer. My own mistake
