Hi everyone,

So my girlfriend and I just purchased copies of Guild Wars 2 and I was wondering what might be the best way to play through the game? At first I was thinking we should both roll the same race so that we can play together straight from the beginning, but then I thought it might be more interesting if we both played separate races so that our characters feel more unique.

So my question is, if we play as the same race, is it possible to just make our storyline’s the same? Can we just play one storyline mission and have it completed for the both of us or will we have to run the same mission once for the each of us?

My other question: if we play as separate races, is there anything stopping us from leaving our starter area and joining up with the other? And if so, will playing like this take away from the experience of the game at all?

Thanks for your time,
YumYumNoodohh

If you play as the same race and make the same choices (both in character creation and during the personal stories themselves), then you can play the mission once and have it count for both of you. One of you will start it, and once it’s done, the other one will have the option of whether or not to proceed with their own story and stay in the same chapter. Obviously, if you’re planning to play through the story together, they should choose the former.

If you play different races, then one of you may go into their race’s capital city (which is just by where you start after the initial instance) and find and head into the Asuran Gate that leads to Lion’s Arch. Once there, you will find yourself in a plaza with five gates that each lead into each of the race’s capital city. So all you’d need to do is enter the gate with the appropriate race (of the character of the other one) guarding it to enter their race’s capital city and be able to meet up there.

The only thing it would take away from is that you will have to play through each of your own stories separately.

Is there any sort of quest progression or prerequisites that are required before we take on storyline missions? My impression was that you would go through your starting area and eventually work your way up to the storyline missions, but it seems like you can just level up any where you want and the storyline is independent of that?

Either way though, how would you recommend we play?

There is a level requirement. Nowadays it’s every multiple of 10 I believe. Once the story arc is unlocked you can play the whole arc till it’s done.

If your mission is identical it (and the rewards) can count for both of you. If it is not identical it only counts for the person that starts it.

You have two choices.

1. Roll two characters as you two wish. Once the tutorial is clear and you’re in Tyria proper, one of you move to the starting zone of the other player, and you can then explore together till level 10. Do all the storyline quests for the 10 arc together for one player, then change maps and do all the 10 arc quests for the other character together. Explore another map together until level 20, repeat. Eventually you’ll reach the point where the personal stories converge, and you can then have the mission count for both of you (since they’re now identical if you make the same choice), or you can continue to play different stories by making different choices to see more than one possibility.

2. Roll two characters with the same race (class still doesn’t affect this, so try to roll two classes with some synergy). Do everything together from the start – all personal story missions will count for both of you in one attempt if you choose that option.

To move to another starter city quickly, press B, enter the Edge of the Mists and walk through the nearby portal to get to Lion’s Arch. Open the map and look for a place with 5 portals in one area near the centre of the map (the purple globe symbol thing), run there. Then move to the other starter city and run to the exit. It’s easier if you join a party with the other player so the other player shows up as a blue dot – so you know which direction to run in once you reach the starter city.

Advanced class synergies are a discussion that people never agree on since they don’t like to talk about the one comparable parameter (mathematics), but on a base level ’don’t pick the exact same class’ and ’don’t run two condition builds together’ are what most people can accept.
