Playing without doing Dungeons

Dungeon specific weapons and armors
Nothing really.
You are removing a way to get exotic gear (dungeon tokens), and part of the game lore (which I’ll assume you don’t care).
(and the other 8 elite specs maxed too)
Short answer: Nothing.
Long answer: Rewards that you could get by doing anything else unless you want a specific armor / weapon skin, and even then, you can get those through sPvP when the feature patch launches on April 15th.
Not much unless there’s a particular dungeon armor you really want, since you can’t get those anywhere else. If you decide to go for a legendary weapon at any point you’ll need to do whatever dungeon is necessary for one of the gifts. A lot of people use dungeons to make gold, get loot, and armor. They use the tokens to get rare weapons to throw into the mystic forge… they’re “free” way of trying to get a precursor.
Thanks everyone. As a pretty casual player, nothing much interests me in what you have described I could get in Dungeons that I can’t get outside them.

Challenges. You are removing yourself to face the most hardest challenges for a player in GW2. The champion trains are ok but you will never face a true challenge, that will only happen in dungeons.
I personally never do dungeons for the reasons above, i am 6 hours daily doing dungeons just becuase i find them fun and it’s challenging to fight some bosses without cheating, stacking, skipping or whatever :P

dungeons aren’t really challenging, maybe the 1st times when you are not sure what to do, but most of them are pretty easy with a decent group. just some of the running/skipping part can be frustrating at 1st, and then there’s Arah which is really the only ‘challenging’ dungeon.

Dungeons provide tokens which are used to buy unique armor and weapon skins.
There are also some Gifts and Runes that can be purchased with the tokens as well, so you may need to run a Dungeon for a specific Legendary weapon or build.
You’re missing all the ‘free’ Gold from salvaging the dungeon skins. With the new wardrobe it’s even better! Now you don’t really even have to chose between more skins and more Inscriptions and Insignias. I have been doing this for a while, and quite successfully at that since the profit does pay for a BLSK.
I discussed it with Ani and he ended up going ham and making this.
Also, once you’ve become good at it, it’s a really lucrative way of getting a lot more gold.

Hmm, well that’s something to consider. The more gold I get, the more gems I can buy, the more I can improve my account.

But you can make the same or more running the champ train and you’re not “stuck” in a dungeon. You can always try a couple and see if you like it. If you do, I suggest watching video first so you can at least know what to expect.
Been playing since beta testing and I’ve done one story Dungeon.
Just not my cup of tea and I don’t particularly like the “culture”. Now that’s not to say I will never try it and learn to love it, but there is plenty going on elsewhere for me to enjoy at the moment. Knowing that the Dungeons are there and available is enough.

How do you make good money on a Champ train. Don’t they only give a few silver each? I guess the gear you get nets a bit more, or maybe I’m running the wrong train?

the majority isn’t, and is usually used for farming gold, but since anet has a precedent of changing dungeons into harder versions, I’d say there is a possibility of seeing this changed. see for example the aetherblades path, even though the average player can do the aetherblades path in 5-10 minutes, it takes considerably more for not so average players.
What I like about dungeon is:
You’re “playing” the game.
It’s nice to learn about how to speed clear, get organized and then try new tactics.
Also, quite decent money.
This is the kind of potential we’re talking about:
Arah P2 can be speed-cleared in less than 10 minutes. It rewards you daily with some tokens, 3.26 gold and random loots to sell (rares give you another 25-40 silver each).
The only way to make money faster is to flip the TP.
So I do both moderately.
There’s quite a steep learning curve, and you won’t immediately get to that point of speed clearing, but you can also sign up in the Dungeon Mentor area in the Dungeon section and it’ll be a much more enjoyable and efficient experience than trying it out on your own.
Without reaching that level of Arah p2 speed clear, once you get the hang of it, you can easily finish many easy dungeons in under 10 minutes and it gives you 1.26-76 gold excluding loots and tokens (which also can be used to get exotics to be salvaged).

With the exception of say, soloing Arah…
You can usually get a harder challenge by soloing world bosses/certain champions for now. Probably no longer possible once megaserver launches though.

Salvage and sell my friend. If you do the Frostgorge Sound champ train, you can make average 7-8g per hour (sometimes little less, sometimes more). Personally, I salvage all except exotics worth 1g or more. you get lots of T6 mats, and with salvage, you’ll get lots of silk. You get lots of blues and greens as drops. You also get dropped silver plus whatever silver you get in the champ bags/boxes. If I do the champ train Saturday and Sunday morning for a few hours I will net about 50g.
As someone said, it’s the best way to make money aside from playing the TP. As a note to that, farming dungeons will give you everything you need to also play the TP. You will also have all the raw mats you need to flex for fast market grabs in the TP. You will never need to buy something at an outrageous price because your bank will always, always, always be full of it.
You can rotate between selling salvaged Insignias/Inscriptions from dungeon gear and selling T6 or watching markets and crafting to sell anything with a high enough profit margin.
Simply put, farming dungeons blows champ farming out of the water. Now, the caveat is that you need a high enough level of personal skill and a good enough team to really do dungeons fast enough to make it worth it. Ozmaniandevil cites 7-8G per hour for farming the train. I would say that is fairly accurate. You will make considerably more per hour of dungeons. That said, it is only worth running if you are able to speed clear consistently.
A safe starting point would be to pick a few dungeons to work on, and supplement with champ farming.
If anything at least do CoFp1 once per day. I haven’t yet met a party bad enough to fail it, and most at least clear it in a moderately reasonable timing.
Hi,
What will I really be missing out on if I don’t do Dungeons at max level? I am having fun with Champion trains and the like, and don’t really feel like doing Dungeons at all. But what am I missing out on?
Thanks.
Short answer, a good source of gold.
Currently playing Heart of Thorns.
Lankybrit: I have been playing since Beta and have not done even 1 of the open world dungeons.
I have 5 Level 80s and none of them have done the final Personal Story either because it requires you to group up and do a dungeon.
I play the game almost every day ~3500 hrs across all characters, ~11,000+ achievement points ~400+ Laurels…
What I am saying is I enjoy the game very much and never stepped foot in a dungeon. ANet says: Play the game your way.
Whatever you find fun…do it(as long as it’s Legal of course)

Not beeing forced to play dungeons was one of the main reasons for me waiting for GW2.
So far i’ve played over 4000 hours and was only 2 times in Ascalon Dungeon because somebody in my guild simply didn’t gave up to try to move me inside a dungeon at one evening.
So far the only thing you miss are the Skins from those dungeons, however personally i don’t really like most of them that much that i could bring myself to run more dungeons
For money .. i have 12 80s now, and with them i can make quite good money with harvesting ore or herbs

Actually Flissy i usually find it a great relaxing way to spend my weekend mornings. I have my coffee and run the train and make enough gold to spend the rest of my time in wvw. I would rather do that than speed run a dungeon which takes ZERO more skill than a champ train. It’s all farming. Dungeon runners should get over themselves. Not everyone needs to or wants to run dungeons and at least we do have an option.

If it takes no more skill, then why don’t you run dungeons as well since it is as relaxing. Is that why PUGs are overcrowded with extremely efficient runs?
I wouldn’t say that dungeons are extremely tough to finish (otherwise you won’t see PUGs anymore), but that’s such a ridiculous notion now you’re saying OP can just write LFG for any/all dungeons and expect the run to go smooth, fast and it can be done as easily as hopping onto a Champ train.
It’s so easy to disprove this. OP will just do that and come back at you with his dungeoning results.
Also, I don’t think Flissy ever mentioned anything about not having an option other than doing dungeons. I don’t think anybody ever did. Why should anyone who speedclears dungeons care that not everybody’s doing it?
(edited by xallever.1874)
This is actually what the infamously misquoted “Play the way you want” line was meant to refer to – picking which game modes you want to play.
You don’t have to do dungeons any more than you have to do WvW or PvP, or PvP players need to do PvE. You won’t miss out on anything except some unique skins. (And of course the stories and other content but I assume you’re not interested in that.)
Having said that if you haven’t ever done a dungeon I’d recommend trying it, just so you can make an informed decision. Many of them are actually pretty easy, especially story mode, and contrary to what some people will tell you doing dungeons doesn’t have to mean watching youtube until you’ve memorised the route and then mimicking it with a speed clear group. There are casual dungeon groups who let anyone in and take their time. And actually do finish it. (All the ones I’ve been in have done anyway.)

Dungeons aren’t hard, but they require you to complete the thing in a group of others who are relying on you to complete it. A lot of people can’t play totally uninterrupted. The nice thing about the champ train is that I can stop any time and get a coffee, go to the bathroom, have a conversation with my husband, or whatever. My point is that the train and dungeon speed clears “pay” about the same, and the speed run dungeons require the same amount of skill, although Flissy seemed to want to convey that champ trains are boring because they don’t require skill, while intimating that dungeons do, which in most cases is simply not true.
Edit: I also find it disheartening to see Flissy tell the OP what he feels or doesn’t. Personally, the only time I didn’t enjoy it was when I was making Sunrise and I literally felt like it was a grind. Now that I’m just doing it “casually” I am enjoying it again
(edited by ozmaniandevil.6805)
I’d disagree that trains require the same minimum amount of skill as a speed clear, but we’re talking between ‘none’ and ‘very little’ here. Not to mean that champ train runners are all bad because invariably there will be a few that carry the kill, and a heck lot who ride on their coattails. But you take that player riding on the coattail and stick him in a speedclear, and it’ll be cleared… without speed.
And it’s pretty much impossible to disagree with the other point. Being able to stop and start as you want is not a luxury you have in dungeons, and I would like to convey to all potential dungeon runners that one, if not the ONLY requirement of a dungeon run, is that you complete it, ESPECIALLY if you open the dungeon. There are the elitists who would press-gang people to use meta builds, but it’s not really ‘necessary’ – however, closing a dung mid-run because you have something random in real life is completely unacceptable.
Rewards are different though. In terms of gold, dungeons with good parties give more because of the token-ecto conversion everyone always seems to forget. Champion trains give more bloodstone dust which can be useful if making toxic consumables, and more skill points per hour for all your mystic forging needs. But champion training gives much more flexibility, and while I don’t actually do it at all, it doesn’t mean the champ train is necessarily a bad thing.
If it works, have fun with it.

Thanks, I will do Frostgorge soon. I’ve been running the Queensdale one.

So your why it takes an extra 15 seconds to kill those Champs? Thanks for sharing.
Just because some choose to leach rewards per above, does not mean others don’t actually put in an effort and actually enjoy the combat (lack of risk or challenge notwithstanding).
This is an example of the “culture” I try to avoid in game.

Queensdale is good for karma and levelling. You won’t get karma for champs in Frostgorge (just an FYI). I sell everything, so ya, there’s a big difference. Once you are able to hit Frostgorge, I suggest guesting to Blackgate (if that’s not your home server). The groups there are usually very cool, and quite generous. Personally, I will put out trays of omnom bars and gold/magic find banners, as do many others. Sometimes there’s good chat, sometimes none, but it rarely devolves into the mess that Queensdale can become.
I actually don’t do dungeons, either. I haven’t felt my enjoying the game was lacking at all, either.
I do map completion, crafting, farming…I will do sPvP after the patch and I really enjoy WvW. If you don’t love running around your own WvW but you really like champion trains, Edge of the Mists is a great alternative to Queensdale. You occasionally get to PvP, you get mass amounts of karma and badges, and you get loot bags and mats just like you would from a PvE champion train.
