I get how they work in general, but I’ve been participating in the Hallowe’en “scrum” and can’t make much sense of how they function there.

• Sometimes I spend a lot of time killing a boss, get a “gold star”, and there’s a drop for me to pick up. Other times, there isn’t.
• Sometimes the boss leaves behind a chest, and sometimes not.
• Sometimes I can open the chest, but usually not.

Can anyone clue me in please? Thanks.

If it’s a champion, golden frame, or a legendary, purple frame, then they drop what is called a “champion box”, that scales to your level.

If they don’t drop such a box, then they’re either just veterans or you didn’t do enough damage to qualify for loot, which is known as ‘tagging’. To be able to tag a monster for loot, you need to do a certain amount of damage compared to the others around you. The more people are there, the higher the HP of the boss scale and the higher your damage must be to ‘tag’ it.

If the chest appears for you to see, you can always “open” it. It is possible that the graphic will NOT update to indicate the chest is opened (due to the massive number of players you are currently viewing), but you should see the reward items you get on the right hand of the screen above the mini-map.

The damage requirement for “tagging” a Champ is pretty low but the chest will not visually spawn for you to see if you did not contribute enough to count in the kill.

Almost all Champions will have the word “Champion” in their name (but not all of them).

I have experienced many many vets and champs that do not drop anything. Recently I killed a champ in Orr with 1 other player—-niether of us got a drop.
The explantions above are true WHEN and IF there is a drop when you qualify for the loot, the truth of the matter is they do not always drop stuff.

Thanks for the responses. I actually haven’t gotten to the point you are talking about, I was referring mostly to my experiences in the Mad King’s Labyrinth, the holiday event. I think it’s just because my character is young and wimpy, so it’s hard for me to put out a lot of damage compared to others, especially with dozens of people all in the same place.

As for the chests… I think that’s also something special to prevent people from getting too rich too quickly. I asked in-game and was told that there’s a limit of one chest per day or something, though it seems like it’s been a lot longer than that since I got one….
