Please help me to make decision on class!
Elementalist might be a good fit for you. They’re top tier damage, welcome everywhere, have staff for “easy mode” weapon that still does extremely high damage while having more active, in-your-face set-ups, like with dagger mainhand.
They’re fairly squishy, that said, but you can compensate by killing stuff fast or using defensive utilities/skills.
1) Range or Melee. In PvE only Ele Staff or Ranger Longbow are in par with melee weapons. In PvP you don’t have that kind of limitation on range weapon.
2) Attack first. That’s my gameplay on my guardian. On an Ele or Thief is this suicidal. It hard but you will have to restraint yourself in PvE.
3) Big numbers. Thief, Ele and Warrior have the biggest numbers.
4) Nice Animation. That’s pretty subjective. Elementalist, Mesmer, Guardian have the most effects and light. Necro have some dark and green kind of smoke in some animation. The Warrior and Thief have some cool move but not much effects. The ranger rapid fire is awesome, it look like a machine gun.
5) Dungeon : Not Necro. Fractal : Guardian, Mesmer and Thief are fantastic for some. WvW zerg : Warrior, Guardian, Ele and Necro are best, but all can participate. WvW Roam and sPvP : Mesmer and Thief are on top, but most can do a decent job.
6) Easy to learn? Elementalist can be hard to play in PvE if you want to reach full DPS. Engineer can be hard to play in sPvP if you want to play the top build with all the kits. Mesmer can be hard to get into until you reach level 80 because its highly dependent on your trait. But really don’t worry too much you can always play easier build for each of those profession. All profession are easy to learn, just some specific build are harder.
7) Skill point? A guess a thief have an easier time on that, but it shouldn’t be a factor on your decision. It’s on of the most trivial part of the game.
Elementalist if you can manage to get used to being very fragile for your first character as you lean the system and how to mitigate damage. They fulfill all the things you said, but animations also depends on race since all races have a different style.
If you want something more forgiving as a first character, I’d go with Ranger, though they have the drawback of being less desired in dungeons (though it is better these days) and their pets have issues if you want to do large army (zerg) WWW though they are really good for small squad/roaming.
Thief might also be right up your alley, but that is one of my few non-80 characters, so I have less to say about them. In short:
More desirable by other players/more flashy playstyle: Elementalist
A lot easier solo play: Ranger
As others have said Elementalist is probably the best fit for what you’re looking for. High damage at both range (staff) and up close (daggers), and they’re also welcome in most areas of play. All that said they are the squishiest class and you might get your butt kicked a lot starting out if you’re new to GW2 in general, especially if you’re coming from a more traditional MMO.
I agree with Malin, if you want a safer pick while you learn the basics of the game Ranger is probably the way to go, they’re great at range and have good options for melee as well.
Elementalist…but its hard to master but its an OP class now. Or thief if you wanna pew pew pew and stealth 80% time.
